Description

An ideal touring base for family or friends wishing to discover this Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in Kent and Sussex.

This stunning Grade ll listed oast is unique to the Kent and Sussex countryside, in the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. This delightful holiday property offers a plethora of beams and an abundance of character, with glorious views across the rolling countryside, particularly from the first floor living space. Originally used to dry hops grown locally, which were then sent to the brewer’s to be used for flavouring beers. Sadly, the twin roundels and the cowl at the top of the kiln has long since disappeared, but the main part of the barn, which was used for the actual storing of hops prior to drying, still has an oak winch in the living area as a reminder of its working past. Situated adjacent to the owner’s 16th-century house built by a Wealden ironmaster, on a delightful, rural, single track lane, guests can access the orchard, tennis court and owner’s paddocks which slope down to the stream at the bottom of the valley. Wadhurst village is close by, and Royal Tunbridge Wells is 7 miles. Bewl Water offers cycle hire, fishing and boating activities. Visit Bateman’s, Rudyard Kipling’s family home (NT), Bodiam Castle (NT), and the beautiful gardens at Scotney Castle and Pashley Manor, or simply enjoy the many walks through the beautiful Sussex countryside directly from the property. Take the opportunity to explore the award-winning English vineyards in the area and sample some superb wines. Wadhurst railway station, 3 miles, provides good connections to London and further sightseeing opportunities. Beach 20 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

Beamed kitchen/dining room with wooden floor. Double bedroom with 6ft bed (zip and link, can be twin). Separate toilet. First floor: Beamed living room with wooden floor, low beams and low doorway. Double bedroom with en-suite wet room. Further double bedroom with 6ft bed and access to Jack ’n’ Jill bathroom with shower attachment and toilet (also accessed from hallway via one step).

Fantastic rural location with lots of walks. Didn’t want to give it such a great review as would like to keep it secret 😉 Thank you for a fabulous break

The cottage is beautifully located outside of the town of Wadhurst, hence a lower mark for Local amenities. But the town is a short car journey away with pubs shops and restaurants. It's a wonderful place to spend time with family and/or friends. The owners are accessible and responsive and made sure that we had everything we needed. I would highly recommend this cottage.

Plumbing and lack of water pressure is a real issue for a rental at this price point

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; The Oast is set in a beautiful rural location with its own private water supply. Water is pumped from a natural spring and then treated and filtered on site. The water pressure is actually excellent. Unfortunately, these guests carelessly left the outside tap running for over 4 hours, flooding the lane and clearly using up all the water for the half hour or so before the tank could refill. This is something that was completely beyond our control. Curiously, they did leave a very positive comment in our guestbook, which seems to contradict this review.

We had the most amazing holiday at Scrag Oak Oast. Beautiful weather and great house with everything we needed. We loved the tennis court and the garden and when it was a little cooler there was plenty of space inside for us all to relax. The surrounding area is beautiful with plenty of walks and places to visit.

Scrag Oak was an utter delight. The house is charming and very well appointed. All the rooms are comfortable and, frankly, I wanted to move in and never leave.

Scrag Oak Oast is a fabulous property in a stunning location and picturesque area and we were lucky enough to have the fabulous May Bank Holiday sunshine. However, please be warned the comings and goings of a young family with 4 boys and 2 dogs intruded on our privacy and tranquillity. The front door of the property opens directly onto a gravel drive. When cars come up the drive the noise is incredible. (In good weather the door needs to be open to get some air flow) Neither the paddock or the garden are secure. Coupled with the fact that the single track lane, directly in front of the property, was surprisingly busy meant that dogs had to be very closely supervised at all times. We hope this review is helpful to those for whom the points we have made would have been a problem.
