Welcome Cottages

A carefully curated collection of properties that offer high quality, good value accommodation in great locations across the UK, Ireland, France and Italy

With a lovely garden that backs onto countryside, and pretty towns and attractions to explore locally, you can do as much or as little as you like.

Once part of an old Victorian village school in Chillaton, Schoolmaster’s Cottage now offers comfortably appointed holiday accommodation, and offers a great deal for those wanting to experience life in a pretty rural village. Adjacent to the owner’s home, this semi-detached cottage is ideal for couples or a family. Well laid out and furnished, it benefits from a good size garden which backs onto open countryside. Chillaton is located in a very unspoilt area of mid Devon, just a short distance from Dartmoor. There is also good access to the stunning beaches of both North Cornwall and Devon. The local town of Okehampton, often referred to as the gateway to Dartmoor, has a good range of shops and local amenities, and the historic market town of Tavistock is famous for its markets and shops.

There are plenty of walks for all ages and abilities on Dartmoor, as well as dramatic scenery and pretty villages with pubs and tea rooms. Towards the coast there are many fine beaches and coves including Saunton, Woolacombe and Westward Ho!. A trip to Lundy Island can be arranged from Bideford pier, and there are numerous places of interest close by including the RHS gardens at Rosemoor, Dartington Crystal, the historic fishing village of Clovelly or the last castle to be built in England at Castle Drogo (National Trust). Roadford Lake and nearby Dingles Steam Museum are other local attractions well worth a visit during your stay. For those wanting to travel a little further, the A30 is a great link into North Cornwall and its many attractions, such as The Eden Project and Padstow. Golf is available at Okehampton and Ashbury, or you can hire a bike and cycle the Tarka Trail at Great Torrington. Beach 25½ miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 2½ miles.

Schoolmasters Cottage is very well appointed, clean and cosy. We were very impressed with the furnishings, bedding and feel of the cottage. Whilst the log burner made for a cosy lounge area, the cottage had a very roomy and airy feel throughout. Although the village of Chillaton doesn't have any amenities, you aren't far from Tavistock, and are ideally situated for days out to places such as Totnes and Bude. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and would definitely return if visiting the area again.

Unfortunately the cottage was unheated when we arrived in February. There was an acrid smell of wood smoke throughout. Perhaps the wood burner was faulty as we stay in other cottages with wood burners and have not experienced problems. We had to leave despite a 2 week booking as my husband has asthma and could not cope with the smoky air. The cottage lacked tlc and was not homely. The staircase is also rather steep and narrow. Sadly the owner refused to compensate us, not even for the utilities which we did not use. We had to find another cottage for the 2 weeks.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; I am disappointed that your first impression of Schoolmaster’s Cottage was not a positive one, as a huge amount of effort was put into refurbishing and transforming the cottage during 2017. I have had positive feedback and comments from other guests and visitors, with compliments about the interior decoration, the garden and the peaceful setting. The heating is set on a timer to come on in the morning, and again in the late afternoon. When you arrived it had not come on yet, but there are instructions in the cottage information book so that guests can advance the heating if required. The guests who were there before and after you did not mention any smell of smoke, and neither I nor my cleaner could detect the smell. The chimneys have been swept this month and the sweep confirmed the wood burner is in perfect working order. The stairs are the original Victorian staircase, which are slightly steeper than modern houses, but they still comply with current UK building regulations. The Agency are always happy to answer questions about the facilities at the cottage at any time prior to booking. I'm sorry you felt unable to stay at the cottage, I don't feel that less than an hour is sufficient time for a fair evaluation and as discussed in my correspondence, under the terms and conditions you agreed to and because I was unable to re-let the property at such short notice, you were not eligible for a refund.
