Scottish Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Just yards from the beach, this character property is 25 minutes from Dumfries and lies in the vacinity of the Galloway Forest Park.

This detached character holiday property has been sympathetically renovated and boasts sea views. Accessed via a unmade single track road, it nestles in the coastal hamlet of Port O’Warren, between Sandyhills and Colvend, on the Solway Coast, making this an ideal holiday destination. The spectacular Rockcliffe to Sandyhills coastal path passes the cottage door and two beaches are close by. The pretty mature garden has a terrace area to enjoy the views. Close to the world-class ‘7 Stanes’ mountain bike facility at nearby Dalbeattie, 10 minutes’ drive. Also in the vicinity is the Galloway Forest Park, which is one of just a handful of ‘Dark Sky Parks’ in the western world in recognition of spectacular sightings of the starry skies it affords. The region’s capital, Dumfries, is a 25 minute drive, and is known for its links with Robert Burns; visitors may explore his house, sample a dram in Burns’ favourite hostelry, or find out more about him at the Robert Burns Centre. Other nearby areas of interest are Colvend Golf Course and Southerness Golf Course, both 10 minutes away. There is complimentary membership to Colvend Golf Club available during your stay (subject to prebooking and availability). Along the coast, discover unspoilt villages, dramatic coastlines, sandy beaches and rocky coves. Beach 200 yards. Shop, pub and restaurant 2 miles.

Spacious living room with open fire and wooden floor. Step to kitchen/dining room with wooden floor. Conservatory. Twin bedroom. Steep stairs to first floor: Double bedroom with 5ft bed. Bathroom with roll-top bath, separate shower cubicle and toilet.

A lovely cottage in a perfect location. Close to beach for the dog but watch out for the jellyfish stranded on the beach when the tide goes out! Rabbits, deer and badgers regularly seen as well as the numerous birds. The cottage itself is lovely and comfortable and the enclosed garden is great for the dog if a bit steep in places. It could do with some blinds in the conservatory to keep the summer heat out whilst out exploring but other than that it was a great place to stay. Lovely owners too.

This property is perfect for bird lovers and walkers. With nice décor and comfortable furnishings inside and outside, on the 2 level garden you can enjoy the views and the songbirds. The owner has provided both binoculars and a bird identification book to get you started! The house is placed on the cliff walk between Sandyhills and Rockcliffe, with a sea stack of nesting cormorants in the Rockcliffe direction. The beach accessed from Portling or Sandyhills at low tide is a nice stroll. The unsurfaced road that takes you to Sanderlings (rocky and bumpy but only 100yds of it) ends at the sea so there is minimal traffic going by to disturb your peace and quiet. Note; the wifi only really works in the lounge and the phone signal (O2) is intermittent.

Response on behalf of the owner; We appreciate you writing your review of Sanderling. We are pleased you enjoyed your holiday and the wildlife that Dumfries and Galloway has to offer. The garden at the moment is attracting lots of bees and butterflies. We occasionally get badgers in the bottom garden. We have just added a WiFi booster so hopefully the signal should reach the full house. We look forward to welcoming you back.

Sanderling is an absolutely stunning property in a fabulous location. The property was immaculate and although cosy with its open log fire it had all the mod cons we needed. There are wonderful walks straight from the doorstep and the local scenery is breathtaking. We enjoyed visiting the local villages of Rockcliffe and Kippford and the RSPB Reserve at Mersehead is a must - as is Threave Castle, the Red Kite feeding station and the nearby Deer Farm. Our hosts Linda and David could not have been more helpful and the welcome pack was very much appreciated. Linda went above and beyond and very kindly (and without prompting) organised a refund of the pet fee as we had to leave our dog at home at the last minute! A truly wonderful relaxing stay.
