Description

A great quality barn conversion at an old silk mill on the western edge of the Peak District.

This superb renovation is part of an old silk mill situated in a lovely rural setting by the river on the western edge of the Peak District. Spacious and stylish, everything is provided to a great specification - from the glass worktops in the kitchen to the underfloor heating and en-suite wet room. Comfortable furnishings and unusual touches of decoration combine to offer a property of real character, with the benefit of a wood burner in the lounge. It has also been carefully designed to be accessible for visitors with limited mobility.
Other buildings at the silk mill have been sympathetically converted and featured in interior design magazines. Michael Portillo visited during the filming of his Great British Railway Journeys where he follows routes up and down the country, originally suggested in an edition of George Bradshaw’s guide. The unique ’Silk Gardens’ - seven indoor themed gardens which evoke the silk route from China - can be viewed by arrangement with the owner. Visitors can also enjoy private fishing and the farm animals such as miniature horses, sheep and chickens.
Langley is a quiet village close to Macclesfield, with picturesque rows of mill worker’s cottages surrounded by spectacular countryside. Several small reservoirs, attractive woodland and ancient packhorse routes characterise the area, with good walks in Macclesfield Forest, up the peak of Shuttlingsloe and across to Tegg’s Nose Country Park. This is also a convenient place to stay to explore the attractions of the north west - Jodrell Bank Observatory, the vibrant cities of Manchester, Chester and Liverpool and historic houses such as Gawsworth Hall (with its summer open air theatre), Little Moreton Hall and Styal Mill. Shop 1½ miles, pub 350 yards and restaurant ¾ mile.

Just returned from an amazing week away in this beautiful holiday cottage. Sara the owner could not be more accommodating and friendly. It is a beautiful cottage in a quiet village with great walks for the dog with Macc Forest and Teggs nose just a short drive away. Sutton Hall is a must visit for amazing food and its dog friendly. Macclesfield is just a short drive away for supermarkets and restaurants, if you like Thai food Chilli Banana is a must visit. It's the perfect place for getting away from it all, and we would definitely visit again. Overall experience was amazing and cannot fault anything, we didn't want to leave.

Spoilt totally by property owner when two beds which had been repaired before broke early in our stay. Sara was less than sympathetic and her attitude to us was awful. Also when we arrived the kitchen top made out of glass was broken and repaired by gaffer tape. This looked unsitely but more importantly was a Hugh safety risk due to risk of germs/food poisoning. There was also cigarette butts in the yard. Some furniture was not assembled correctly. The WiFi connection was very poor.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; River Cottage has been awarded a 4* rating which is thoroughly deserved. Prospective guests only have to look at the other reviews to gain a true reflection of us as property Owners and the quality of the accommodation. The property was originally booked for two adults and a dog. However, four adults and a dangerous dog occupied the property. The guests managed to break the two twin beds in the ground floor bedroom on the third night of their stay. These beds are checked each time we clean and service the property and have not been repaired in the past as the review suggests. At the time we inspected the damage to the beds, we were horrified by the evolving poor state of the cottage. Replacement beds were ordered on that day and paid for by me. The condition of our beautifully restored property deteriorated significantly during the guests stay with us. This was compounded by the dog being left unattended for in excess of 4.5 hours which contravened the terms and conditions under which the property had been booked. The dog was observed jumping all over the sofa and armchairs and repeatedly hurling itself against the wooden and glass doors which was extremely frightening for other people on site. The dog barked incessantly during that time and the guests were non contactable. The glass worktop in the kitchen had been damaged initially by a chip which was unreported and a crack developed. The duct tape used to cover the crack was a temporary measure and as soon as we were aware of the situation, the Agency contacted all prospective guests to confirm that they were happy to go ahead with their holiday. The cottage has been closed week of 06/04/2018 in order to replace the damaged worktop. A number of glass and wooden chopping boards are available in the cottage to ensure that food hygiene is not compromised by the damage. A carpet and upholstery cleaner had to be hired after the guests stay and it took in excess of 5.5 hours for us to restore the cottage to its usual high standard. There had been very deep snow the week before the guests came to stay at River Cottage. If there were cigarette ends in the garden they must have been covered by the snow and not visible to us so apologies for that. I would like to confirm that this is a 'No Smoking' property and those guests who wish to indulge should take responsibility for the disposal of said 'ends'. I am very unclear about which furniture was assembled incorrectly, as the cottage does not boast a quantity of flat pack furniture! We have not had any complaints regarding the Wi-Fi connection to date. One of the guests had a Land rover Defender which broke down during their stay and I facilitated the speedy repair through a garage owned by very good friends of mine. I signed for a recorded delivery at their request which enabled them to continue with their holiday and did not confine them to the cottage to sign for the delivery. I do not believe that these are the actions of someone with an 'unsympathetic and awful attitude'. My family and I have spent the last 15 years renovating this truly wonderful and historic site and we are extremely proud of our achievements. We trust future guests will look to our other feedback for a more balanced review of our property.

Thanks heaps for having us, we had an amazing stay. The cottage is incredibly comfortable and has loads of charm. The location is perfect, close to shops in one direction, and on the foot of the peaks district in the other direction. Nice local walks and pubs in the area, and a short drive away from the beautiful Goyt's Valley. Would love to come and stay again.

the cottage was lovely and bigger than it looks inside, the only complaint is this property should have 2 showers which is why i booked this last year, but overall I would come back to this as it's so quiet.
