Scottish Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Set in an area with abundant wildlife, this characterful property lies on a 300-acre estate with many outdoor activities available.

Situated on a 300-acre Scottish Highland estate, these two historic properties, The Fish House and The Byre, lie close to a picturesque, natural harbour and enjoy stunning views across this wild and unspoilt area. The Fish House is set over three floors, whilst The Byre is a stone barn conversion. Both stand detached on the Rispond Lodge Estate, which is accessed via a short lane off the spectacular route known as the North Coast 500 in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.
The Fish House (ref UKC1398) is a listed building that has been lovingly restored to an exceptionally high standard whilst retaining many of its original and unique features. Part of the building was originally used to store the nets and fishing material at the height of the herring boom. Wooden beams, solid oak flooring and a large feature wood burner provide a traditional feel with a contemporary ambience. The main living area is on the first floor and runs the length of the house. There are four beautifully presented en-suite bedrooms as well as a second living room.
The Byre (ref UKC1399) has a pretty open-plan living room and dining area, with feature wood burner. There is a bright, well-equipped kitchen at the rear, and two large double en-suite bedrooms. A spiral staircase leads up to the first floor second living room, which has a steeply coombed ceiling and spans the length of the cottage.
This secluded base is a haven for wildlife. Deer, otters, eagles and a wide variety of bird life are regularly seen in the region and seals are known to frequent the harbour. For outdoor enthusiasts the local area is second to none. Kayaking, sailing, fishing, hill-walking, bird watching and golf are all available right on the doorstep. The nearest beach, just a short stroll from the house is outstanding, and is a perfect crescent of white sand bounded by rocks and hills. Beach 200 yards. Shop, pub and restaurant 3 miles. These properties can be booked together to sleep up to 12 guests.

Well-appointed cottage on small private estate, meaning you have the run of many hectares of wild moorland, small beaches, coves, etc. So a fantastic, quiet location. Good wifi, with above average speed for a holiday cottage, but no mobile phone signal unless you go out and climb the hill behind the house! The cottage itself was clean, had everything you needed for a stay. There is a laundry room in the garden. Very little documentation about the cottage, laundry etc. The small mezzanine-type upper room is really not much use for anything, as its too low-ceilinged even for a small person, but really the rest of the cottage is a fine size for 2-4 people. We would certainly return again!

Very comfortable and tastefully refurbished and decorated cottage/byre. All amenities available including a perfectly functioning internet connection and a wood burning stove (too warm to use during my stay!)

We booked our break at The Byre as we were looking for a quiet and isolated location where we could enjoy winter walks along the beaches, over the rocks and moorland. All we can say is that this location did not disappoint. It was definitely worth the long road trip there and back. Amazing scenery and great wildlife. A very secluded location. I think we were the only people on the estate aside from the odd fisherman popping over to check their lobster pots! Thoroughly enjoyed out stay in the comfortable accommodation. Good facilities, nice hob & oven to cook with. The water was brown, but tastes delicious and was nice to have soft water. Comfortable bed, nice linen & good shower. The property was lovely and warm, even with only one radiator on. We lit the woodburner a couple of the nights which made the entire property lovely and cosy and warm. Fast wi-fi too - even though there is free-sat TV, we watched a few films on a streaming service which worked fine. Unfortunately we missed the northern lights by 90 mins!!! but they are visible on clear nights if you are out at the right time. Highly recommended if you are looking for a quiet getaway.

An excellent cottage, generally very well equipped and in a fantastic setting. I would not hesitate to return, and hope to again next year, but there were some niggling issues. 1. There was an almost complete lack of information in the cottage and, for example, I only found the excellent laundry room by chance (It's in a large shed in the garden). 2. Swapping between the TV and the DVD player is a pain in the neck as it involves unplugging one, swapping over the HDMI cable and then plugging it all in again. Why is everything not permanently connected up? Any chance of some DVDs as well as the nearest shop that sells them is about two hours away? 3. It would have been nice to have found at least a pint of milk in the fridge on arrival as there aren't many shops around. 4. Some champagne flutes would also have been perfect. 5. Yes, the water really is brown. Very brown. This didn't worry me but I could see a lot of guests being more than a little concerned. Nearly all these issues can be easily fixed and if they were the cottage would be a solid 10 for everything.
