Located down a long drive in a quiet wooded valley, just outside the Exmoor village of Wheddon Cross, Quarme Coombe Cottages offer a real haven away from the world. The quiet and beautiful natural countryside is right on the doorstep of these detached cottages. Hedgehog Cottage has a cosy interior and there is a good sized garden at the rear of the cottage, as well as a sitting-out area at the front. Further afield, there is superb scenery and walking on the South West Coastal Path, or inland on the moors. The Victorian villages of Lynmouth and Lynton, famous for the Watermeet Gorge (National Trust), Valley of the Rocks and the funicular cliff railway, are within an hour’s drive. Looking towards Minehead, there is the promenade to enjoy an ice cream whilst walking along, as well as having a good array of shops and other amenities. A visit to the enchanting medieval Dunster Castle (National Trust), with its beautiful terraced gardens, deer park and mill will make for an interesting day out. Watchet, Porlock and Porlock Weir hold plenty of charm and interest to those who visit the area. There are beaches at Minehead, Dunster and Blue Anchor. Shop, pub and restaurant 1½ miles.

The cottage met our requirements for my son and myself for an HQ with our dog to explore Exmoor. We were grateful for the provision of a wood burning stove as the boiler for the heating and hot water gave up during our first of 4 nights at the cottage. Unfortunatley, it was not mended until the middle of our visit which meant we had 2 days of no heat or hot water which is not pleasant in January! On the second evening the son of the owner tried to sort out the problem with a couple of cans of oil but it only made the situation worse as the boiler belched out noxious fumes which came into the house before giving up again. We were given an extra load of wood in compensation. There is no phone reception at the cottage and the internet was intermittent so that communications were difficult. The village shop at Wheddon Cross which also has a garage next door is first rate withh all the basics and a number of locally produced products.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; We are sorry that this guest had a bad experience with the boiler. An Engineer attended the same day as we were notified that there was a problem. He managed to get it going, but not properly as it needed some further parts which were obtained the next morning and the boiler was fixed by 11 am. Whilst we received texts from the guest, she did not get the replies we sent or did not respond to them. The phone signal down at the cottage is variable but the Wi-fi normally works well and you can make Wi-fi calls or face time audio calls. There is also a land line phone in the laundry room for emergencies.

Lovely cottage in a beautiful location. Our 2 year old loved it. A nice break from the rush of London. Great location for exploring exmoor. Would definitely recommend to others who love the country side. Thanks

The cottage was clean, comfortable and well equipped and had character, set in beautiful countryside yet a short drive from Minehead. We loved Exmoor , it felt like a special place with the Ponies and Deer on the Moor and the wonderful views.

We fluked it as out of the 3 cottages at this location we were the only one in use. Due to being only occupants very peaceful. Its an old farmer workers cottage, stairs are rather steep. The banister is very sturdy, so I had no issue navigating the stairs (I have artistes in my ankles). The nearest pub, Rest and Be Thankful is over a mile away, the road has no pavement. All you could ask for in a pub. Next door is a petrol station with a Kwik-E-Mart attached. Didn't seam possible to use cottage a base to walk dog, as cattle in fields or big signs saying "Private keep out".
