Rural, unique and homely. Upside down barn conversion, means the living room, with its floor length windows, has beautiful views, not another house in sight! The barn was always warm as the heating is good. The fire was an added bonus. Some reviews mention the main road but this was not a problem at all. Can faintly hear the road when you are outside but this is masked by the little steam rushing through the front garden.

Stayed over new year. Good communication from owner before our holiday. Easy to find. Cottage is very close (about 100 metres) to A361, a very busy road. Road noise offset by sound of stream which runs right next to cottage: road noise could be a problem with windows open. Cottage very clean, well equipped, welcome milk and biscuits and treats for our 2 dogs. Warm, easy to control central heating plus log burner which provided enough heat for us to turn heating off. Unlimited hot water, 2 bathrooms with nice towels. We took our own mattress topper as I have severe back problems- we were glad we had done so, as mattresses very hard and we feel that mattress toppers on all beds would aid comfort. Dog walking close by either across fields or towpath. There is no outside tap to clean the thick red mud from the dogs, so we ended up using a mop bucket filled with water, and cleaning our retriever and labradors' legs one by one in the bucket! An outside tap would be an easy and useful addition in a cottage that is otherwise so dog friendly. Couple of pubs within walking distance- we ate at "dog friendly" The Globe one evening, it was basic pub grub, but fine if this is all you fancy: we had to sit in public bar area of pub, which isn't particularly nice, and this didn't feel very dog friendly! Much nicer pubs a drive or long walk away. Bonus in proximity to M5 and North Devon link road is that it is easy to travel from a central location.

We really enjoyed our stay at Pretty Benches Barn. The owner was very welcoming and made arrival/departure really simple. The barn is lovely, with all the facilities we needed, including one of the best stocked kitchens I've used on holiday. The location is great if you don't mind a bit of road noise, as it's so quick to get back on the main road to go anywhere. The local town has a great park for the children, and a small shop which had everything we needed. The canal is very close with some great local pubs (with more play facilities for the children - perfect).

Very enjoyable holiday, comfortable and well situated cottage, just outside the village but the noise from the main road was a disappointment. A few recommendations for the cottage as follows; needs a pastry brush, salt and pepper, spare refuse bags, cling film and tin foil. An emergency number for a vet should be supplied. A number of pubs we went to were either closed permanently or had selected opening hours so advice needs updating.
