The cottage is a beautiful old building which has been decorated with some lovely period furniture. The cinema room was great. However the cottage has a very rickety staircase whose handrail was wobbly and felt unsafe and the stairs themselves had narrow treads. Also each stair creaked which meant if you went to the bathroom (downstairs) in the night you woke others up. In the games room, when we attempted to assemble the table tennis table we found one of the fixtures broken and therefore struggled to assemble it. When it was assembled there was very limited space around the table to play properly. On arrival at the property we found some fixtures broken (a light switch and the table tennis table) and as honest people we informed the owners of our findings. We also found that one of the plastic fixtures on the handle to raise and lower one of the breakfast bar seats kept coming off so we left it off and put it on the kitchen work surface (not sure if this was broken or just loose fitting). We didn't think to inform the owners of this. Also during our stay, one of the garden chairs collapsed and broke when sat on which we informed them of. On leaving the property to travel to get our ferry home the owners insisted that they go round the property with us checking everything in every room and noting down the breakages we had pointed out (and looking for any others) and then wanted us to sign to say that we were responsible for these. Obviously we objected and they did remove the table tennis table from the list but would not budge on the other items (the light switch and breakfast bar seat handle). They pointed out that the insurance company would pay the first 135 Euros and due to time we had no option but to sign because the delay in leaving the property meant that we were cutting it close to have time to catch our ferry. We feel aggrieved that we signed for things we did not break. It is obvious that previous visitors had kept these breakages quiet and our honesty was our undoing! It would also be nice to have some information in the property on local amenities, eg nearest supermarket, boulangerie, bank, doctors, hospital, pharmacy etc.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; The staircase is of no risk, like any wooden staircase, it creaks. An agent from Novasol has inspected our house, if there were any dangers we would not be able to rent our property. Regarding the breakages, we conduct a check at every departure tenants, none of these things were broken before. We called Novasol when you warned us of the breakages the day before you left, and Novasol advised us to get yourselves to sign the document so that the damages would be covered by the Minor damages scheme. We did explain this to you. As far as local activities and commerce are concerned, we always ask guests if they want to know where anything is. We have pamphlets available in several languages. As we live next door, we always tell guests that they can come and see us if they need anything.
