Enjoyed our stay, great location not to far from most attractions. Great cottage very homely my only complaint would be the double bed it was rock solid I understand mattresses are a very personal choice but it's the most uncomfortable bed I have ever slept in.

We have just returned home after a wonderful week. This was the fifth holiday we have spent in cottages at Pillhead Farm and the second time in the Garden Cottage. The cottage is immaculate and comfortable, tastefully furnished with high quality furniture and equipment. The cup cakes left to welcome us were delicious and we really enjoyed them with a cup of tea after an horrendous journey. The owners are very helpful and nothing is too much trouble. Our daughter and son-in-law and their young family joined us this time and we all enjoyed using the pool and other things provided for our comfort. We love visiting this part of Devon, and especially the cottages at Pillhead, if we want to be active there is plenty to do and if we prefer a relaxing day we can ably do that in the gardens or around the pool.

We have stayed in cottages all over the country for the past 25 years and, whilst we enjoyed our holiday in North Devon with our family during the hottest May Bank Holiday weekend since records began, we have given this cottage an overall score of only 5/10 for two reasons. 1) We phoned the owners sometime before the holiday began to request that we change the start date from a Saturday to the Friday before, for family reasons. They asked us to phone them on the Wednesday 2nd May, and, provided nobody had booked the property for that Friday - they would be happy to change the day. We checked on line and the cottage was not booked, so we telephoned the owners, who refused the agreed arrangement and told us point blank that we could not arrive until 4pm on the Saturday. 2) One of the reasons we liked this property was the swimming pool (and childrens pool) and we therefore booked it when the agent confirmed by email that the owners had agreed to try and open the swimming pool a week earlier than usual. The agent asked us to contact the owners two weeks before our holiday which began on 5th May, which we did. The owners confirmed that, despite a few cold evenings in mid April, they would still try. When we spoke to them on Wedneday 2nd May they informed us that the swimming pool would not be available for the weekend but possibly during the week. The weather was forecast to be the hottest May Day bank holiday since records began - so it was not that imperative that the pool would need to be heated anyway. We expressed our disappointment as we had already told them that it was our eldest grandson's birthday party on the weekend and he was looking forward to a 'pool party' before he and his family returned back home on the Monday. When we arrived at the cottage we asked the owner when the pools would be open and he said they would not be open at all that week, and that they had not yet been chemically treated. When we saw the pools - they appeared unkempt with leaves floating on the surface and what appeared to be algae on the bottom. It appeared, to all of us, that little effort had been made to try and get the pools ready for our stay, as originally agreed.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; We are naturally very disappointed to have received such a poor review, given it is our first one. We were asked just over a week before the booking if seven guests could arrive a day early for a party even though the cottage sleeps a maximum of six. We take the safety of guests sleeping in our properties very seriously and for this reason we could not accommodate the additional person the guest expected to bring and neither could we offer another cottage for £50. The booking conditions do state that guests cannot over occupy a property. These guests also asked for a discount as they initially claimed only 2 guests would be staying during the week, but they were advised the price would be as advertised which was already discounted. The prices are per property and not per person. We did however agree that if it was possible we might be able do a Friday start but that the guests would need to phone nearer the time. Although the property appeared available online when the guests phoned on the Wednesday evening, I apologised but explained that we were actually unable to agree to the earlier date as we unexpectedly had a bereavement and we had a variety of urgent things to attend to which had to be done before the weekend. I also confirmed twice on the phone that that the pool was unlikely to be available during the visit as although it can sometimes open earlier than our guaranteed dates of mid-May to mid-September, (our prices are higher in this period for this reason) and this is totally dependent on the weather in the preceding three to four weeks. We had put the pump going and started the chemical treatment a week earlier than normal but heavy rain and high winds in April played havoc with water quality and late frosts prevented us getting the heating and filtration system fully operational so an earlier opening was not possible as even in a heatwave we have to make sure the water is safe for our guests to use. Finally I was concerned after our initial phone conversation that we could not meet all our guests demands. So we asked our agent to offer a full refund to enable the visitors to find a 7 person cottage with a Friday changeover and a pool which was guaranteed to be open at the beginning of May and therefore more suitable for their needs. The guests however declined the offer. The comfort of our guests are important to us and we will do our utmost to help with any issues or requests. We sorry that on this occasion due to circumstances beyond our control, we were unable to accommodate their requests.
