Description

Pathways Cottage is in a perfect location for exploring the historic buildings, pretty villages and the beautiful scenery of Derbyshire.

This charming stone built cottage dates back to 1703 and has retained many of the original features throughout. Beautifully decorated, Pathways Cottage is a real gem in the wonderful village location of Higham in Derbyshire. Offering a cosy living room with a wood burner, a large kitchen/dining room with crackling wood burner and a wonderful range to cook on, through to a conservatory to relax in whilst looking out onto the cottage garden. Upstairs you will find two bedrooms and a beautiful bathroom with a shower and the all important slipper foot bath to soak away your troubles.
Walkers will find many routes directly from the doorstep offering you the chance to explore this fantastic area. Close by you will find Hardwick Hall, built in the 1590s by ’Bess of Hardwick’ the second most powerful woman in England after Queen Elizabeth I. The jaw dropping hall is now open to the public through the National Trust and has a visitor centre with shop and coffee shop. Whilst visiting Hardwick Hall why not visit the estates original watermill, still in operation and open to the public, then enjoy lunch at the Hardwick Inn dating back to the 16th century. A short drive away you will find the delights of the Peak District, including Chatsworth House, the town of Matlock and Matlock Bath famous for its illuminations and Heights of Abraham cable car. For a nostalgic journey back in time hop onto one of the Peak Steam engines or journey back in time on one of the historic narrow boats on the Cromford Canal.
The towns of Chesterfield and Derby are just a 20-minute drive away, and nearby Nottinghamshire is also just 20 minutes away, here you can marvel in the famous Nottingham Castle or Sherwood Forest and go on a hunt for the infamous Robin Hood. Chesterfield is a must to see the crooked spire that is the centre of this historic market town. All in all Pathways Cottage will not disappoint and really does have something for everyone straight from the doorstep with golf and fishing available locally. We had a fantastic weekend at Pathways and would highly recommend it to others. The lounge is cosy, and perfect for relaxing after exploring the local area and walks. The kitchen is great for cooking and eating in, and the main bedroom is large with a lovely comfortable bed. But for us the jewel in the crown was the patio garden, which was lovely to sit in and enjoy a beautiful summer weekend. The BBQ supplied came in very handy also! Many thanks to Julie and Simon, who really are the perfect hosts. We will definitely be back.

Pathways is a real "home from home". Spacious rooms, tasteful furnishings and a charming patio garden with a BBQ are all provided in this stone house which we imagine will be very cosy in winter as there are log burners in the lounge and kitchen as well as full central heating. There's a pretty conservatory with a comfy sofa leading to a utility room cum downstairs toilet. Parking is on the road but we never had any problem in parking right outside the door. There are two pubs close by. The Crown, in the village and just a hundred yards away, serves good food and beer with a good value carvery on a Sunday and is dog friendly for both drinking and eating. The other; The Greyhound is a bit further away but still just short stroll. It's a Marston chain pub/family restaurant so can get busy (and noisy) but is also dog friendly. There's a good walk opposite The Greyhound which goes down a drive and then into fields to Ogston Reservoir, there's a route guide at the cottage. The owners do everything they can to make their guests comfortable and a fine job they do of it. We shall return!

The owners have done a great job with this lovely cottage, with great attention to detail. In particular the bathroom and kitchen are stunning, spacious and well equipped. We slept comfortably and felt very at home here. We visited Crick tramway village, Mount Cook adventure Centre and Matlock farm park, all within easy reach. We visited with 2 young children and found the big Tesco nearby very useful. The locals were also very friendly. The road that the cottage is on is relatively busy but this didn’t bother us too much as were used to it at home but this is the only minor drawback I could see, which may or may not bother those wanting a real tranquil place to stay. If you want somewhere cosy, homely and comfortable with real character and a great location for exploring Derbyshire then stay here.
