Description

If you can tear yourself away from the facilities at Orford Mill, take a trip to nearby Bideford, Westward Ho! or even Clovelly.

Orford Mill lies alongside the River Torridge in a beautiful wooded valley, nestled below the historic town of Torrington. With its air of peace and tranquillity, abundant wildflowers and river life, it became the setting for Henry Williamson’s magical story of Tarka the Otter. Indeed, the mill wheel in which Tarka hid from the hound Deadlock was at Orford Mill. This superb location makes a wonderful holiday base, especially for families, with sandy beaches on the North Devon coast only 10 miles away.

The complex consists of a Grade II listed water mill and manor house, now converted into nine delightful cottages, all equipped to Visit Britain ‘4 Star’ standard. Most overlook the charming ornamental courtyard with its ponds and flowerbeds. Riverside is detached and overlooks the river. All cottages retain character features such as exposed beams and stonework, and each is furnished in an individual style to a very high standard. Guests can enjoy an indoor heated swimming pool, with lovely river views, as well as a spa room and all-weather tennis court, games room and fenced outdoor children’s play area. There is an on-site cafe with wi-fi (open 9am-9pm). In addition, fishing rights are available on 200 yards of river (bring own licence, or avail locally at cost). All the waterways are safely fenced.
The countryside around Orford Mill is dotted with sleepy villages nestled among the hills, while extensive woodlands, traversed by many footpaths, offer the chance to experience the area’s natural beauty at close quarters. Adjacent to the grounds are the renowned RHS gardens at Rosemoor, and other local attractions include Dartington Crystal, offering a factory tour and visitor centre. Great Torrington is only a mile away with good shopping and amenities, and there is golf at nearby Hartland. Orford Mill adjoins Torrington Common which extends to 365 acres, incorporating 20 miles of footpaths. The common is a haven for wildlife. The ‘Big Sheep’ and ‘Milky Way’ theme parks are each less than 10 miles away.

The River Torridge runs downstream to the ancient port of Bideford, still with a working quay offering boat trips out to Lundy Island. Just around the corner is the attractive little town of Appledore with its colourful houses and narrow streets. To either side lies Devon’s most spectacular stretch of coastal scenery – a chain of magnificent cliffs and rocky promontories, interspersed here and there by long flat sandy beaches, where the Atlantic breakers roll in to create ideal surfing conditions. There are splendid beaches at Instow and Westward Ho!, the latter bordered by the Royal North Devon Golf Club, and the Northam Nature Reserve. Further west is the supremely picturesque Clovelly, whose narrow, cobbled main street descends at a dizzying gradient to the little harbour below. To the south, the cathedral city of Exeter can be reached via a delightful drive through lush river valleys.

Orford Mill offers very attractive accommodation set in 3 acres of beautiful gardens with streams, waterfalls and the water wheel which is still operational. Excellent as a touring base, it makes a good choice for a holiday whatever the weather. Shop ½ mile.

Could be and probably has been a nice place to stop. Needs more attention, ie. checking all equipment is clean etc. When booking not in height of season times that pool can be used should be stated.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; We were disappointed to receive such a negative review from you as you did not raise any issues with us during your stay. The cottage was thoroughly cleaned before you arrived, and we can’t understand what equipment you feel was not clean. Our swimming pool is open for 12 hours every day. On weekdays out of season, we allow a swimschool to use it for 4 hours per day. There is a full list of times that it is available in the Welcome folder in every cottage, so we are puzzled by your comment that times should be stated, as the list is very clear.

Too many rules to adhere to, the shower only worked once and you only get access to the pool at certain times which were inconvenient to our holiday.

The shower over the bath only worked once in the 7 days. We mentioned it twice but were told it was due to other cottages using the water. The last week in September the cottages were not full and the last day we were the only ones there. The shower still didn't work. Required to remove outside shoes before entering the cottage. This was difficult for one with need to sit to put on & remove shoes. It was well situated to walk into the town, but we did have to find that out for ourselves.

We really enjoyed our week at this cottage. The swimming pool and location in Devon were real pluses when traveling with a toddler.

We enjoyed our stay but 1st day we arrived wasn't very welcoming & lots of do's & don't were given to us by the owner. Our shower never worked the whole week of our stay and when we reported it nothing was done. We were not able to have any heating as controlled by the owner. Cream Tea's are supplied but we were charged £8 for 2 scones and a pot of tea but when we checked the price in the book it was supposed to be £7 for 2 with a 10% discount for residents so another disappointment. We would stay again but perhaps under new management

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner. We are puzzled by your comments about the heating, as this cottage has electric heaters which can be turned on by just the press of a switch. When you mentioned an issue with the shower, I explained that occasionally there can be a slight drop in pressure if a lot of cottages are running water at the same time. This is only ever temporary. The shower was in full working order before you arrived, and has been in full working order since you left. I am sorry you were overcharged by 80p for your cream teas. If you had let the person serving you know that you were residents, the discount would have been applied. This would have had a much more satisfactory outcome than complaining on social media some time after the event.

Beautiful area, central to many places of interest. Lovely walks on your doorstep. Swimming pool lovely and warm. Gardens relaxing to sit in whether coffee first thing in the morning or a beer or wine later after a day out.
