Description

A former grainstore, this three-storey house is just 200 yards from the shore and has views across the bay.

In a stunning coastal location, Old Port Store is a charming and most distinctive detached home with its origins dating from circa 1820. The house is Category B listed by Historic Scotland and is situated about 200 yards from the shores of Luce Bay amidst beautiful rural surroundings. From the garden and the west side of the house there are wonderful views across the bay. The house was originally a grain store serving the long since gone harbour at Stairhaven, and has been converted into a distinctive three-storey holiday home, with the exterior having changed very little over the years. Ideal for families, couples or groups, the house is arranged over three floors with four en-suite bedrooms. A particularly attractive feature of this beautiful property is the impressive living room with a picture bay window to Luce Bay, and a large dining kitchen. This truly is a house of character where the traditional stone exterior marries with the well-proportioned interior. The Old Port Store is perfectly placed for easy access to many of the attractions that this corner of Wigtownshire offers, including Mull of Galloway, beautiful gardens typified by Logan Botanic Gardens and Castle Kennedy Gardens. The Galloway Forest offers exceptional walking and cycling and has been designated the first Dark Sky Park outside the USA. There are many beautiful coastal walks to be enjoyed, stone circles and ancient ruins and an RSPB reserve. There are other sporting opportunities such as trout and salmon fishing on the numerous local lochs. Sea angling is available from both the rocks along the coastline as well as by boat. Beach 200 yards. Shop, pub and restaurant 3 miles.

Spacious living room with picture window. Spacious kitchen/dining room with breakfast area. Utility. Separate toilet. First floor: Two bedrooms, each with TV and en-suite shower room with toilet; one double with 5ft bed, one twin. Second floor: Two double bedrooms, each with TV and en-suite bathroom with bath, shower cubicle and toilet; one with 6ft zip & link bed (can be twin beds on request).

Hired the Old Port Store for Christmas for a family reunion with 6 adults and 2 children (8). The property easily accommodated us with the downstairs being a particular highlight. The kitchen/diner space is massive and allowed the cooks and the diners to be together most of the time. With 2 fridges and freezers there was more than enough space for the Christmas surge and whilst the oven and hob are a 'normal' size, we found no issues pulling together our Christmas dinner. The dining room table was big enough to allow 8 comfortably plus space in the middle for Turkey etc. Living room is best part of the house; contemporary but homely and a real communal feel to it. Bedrooms are of an average size but with their own ensuite and plenty of storage space it didn't ever feel cramped. The bedrooms are split over 2 floors which is really useful if you want kids to be separate from other family members during early mornings! The heating in the place is epic, your biggest challenge will be keeping the balance of heating right! Out and about there are some lovely walks along the coast and whilst the house isn't isolated, we found most of the nearby houses empty. The beach was initially a little disappointing as it is very rocky (not so good for elderly or very young to walk on) but for our group is was great for shell finding and stone skimming. Finally, whilst not a rated score on this website, I have to commend the owner for their support. The welcome pack included extra items such as extra large foil and a bacofoil basting dish for the Turkey as well as milk/juice/crisps/biscuits/chocolates/tea/coffee/dishwasher tabs...... Also when we left the inevitable items on departure, it was no fuss to send them on. Communication was timely and all manner of questions (inc what size is the oven!) were dealt with well. Highly recommended.

House is as/better than as described on web site, with some hidden extras. Lots of big fluffy towels per bathroom, large bedrooms with super comfy beds. Loads of toys, games, books, and dvds for adults and children, no need to bring any! Very well equipped kitchen (coffee pod machine and pods, cafetière, hand blender, welcome selection of biscuits, OJ, and some wine), lacked nothing. Even liquid soap and lots of toilet roll and kitchen roll! Super efficient heating system. Loads of parking. Very comfy lounge. Stroll to the sea, coast walk from end of drive. Galloway Forest is half hour drive away, with Aldi and Sainsbury’s in Newton Stewart on way back. Play barn in Stranraer 11 miles away at ‘The Creamery’, with Morrison’s just a bit further. Took loads of toys/books/DVD’s for granddaughter and extra kitchen equipment that never got unpacked. Great place as a base but a good drive really to ‘anywhere’, but again that’s as described. We love to cook, so drive to local bar and restaurants not necessary, and with a 2 year old, not really required. Great place to get away from it all.

A lovely property in a great position. Beautifully appointed and equipped. Our only complaint was that by the time we stayed, in mid September, we would have liked thicker duvets, although it had been a hot summer.

Fantastic accommodation. Quiet location with great views over the beach. Plenty of room to give everyone their own space or come together for meals or games. Well stocked just like being at home - plates, cutlery, pots, glasses etc etc. DVDs and family games galore. Outside furniture and some beach stuff. Great break with walks, gardens, all around. We’ll be back.
