The Old Pennistone is situated in a lovely location and is a very homely cottage with beautiful views. However, upon arrival we were not met with the key and the directions getting to the cottage were not clear. Subjecting in us going over the wrong cattle grid and nearly getting the car stuck. Another reason why we chose this cottage was because of the facility of a hot tub, however for 3 days it's very dear and a lot more for a week. The hot water went off halfway through my friends shower, I think the owner must have it on a meter. Also there is no WiFi. Even though we were out walking during the day it would have been handy to have some wifi for the evening. We also read that some of the guests received a welcome pack but we didn't. When she came to collect the key she was very rude, banging on the door and window just because we were running slightly late. 10 o'clock is early for check out anyway, it's usually 11. She had a bad attitude and kept shaking her head and looking at us in disgust. Enough to put a dampener on the whole holiday. Would she be so rude infront of young children? We just think that for the money we paid we should have got a lot more and a smile from the owner wouldn't have gone a miss!

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for your comments on the cottage and location. It is not always possible to greet guests when arriving later than 4pm. Directions to the cottage can be rather difficult when it is dark and given it is a rural location. There are no meters in the cottage and it is not advertised as having WIFI. The prices for the hot tub are clearly advertised so guests can decide prior to booking whether or not they wish to use it. Check out time has always been 10am and this applies to all properties with Cottages.com and is stated in the booking terms and conditions. The reason I knocked on the window was because you did not come to the door straight away and it was 40 minutes before you vacated. My Welcome tray consists of Tea, Coffee, Sugar & Biscuits and all guests receive one, (returning guests receive a box of chocolates). We have a polite notice to advise guests on the rules around using the hot tub which are things such as replacing the cover when not in use, unfortunately when I arrived it was evident that this rule had not been adhered to.

We have been to old Pennistone 8 times now with kids and with just the 2 of us , and just love the location. Carol the owner is very helpful when needed but leaves you alone to enjoy your holiday.

Fabulous break in a very remote quiet location. Cottage is well equipped and spotless. We didn’t opt for the hot tub and it was just as well as the weather was atrocious. Nearby Kirkby Stephen has a supermarket with all you need. Definantely recommend but check the weather forecast!

Super cottage but we really missed wifi! We love to cook but the hob of the cooker had solid rings which took forever to heat & were uncontrolable......had to adapt to the oven. Sort those two elements & we'd give it a 10!

The cottage surrounding area has spectacular views. Inside the cottage is very cosy and the living area upstairs is very spacious where you can see the views in different angles because of its huge windows.

We were very impressed with this cottage. It had been very tastefully furnished and to a high standard. The location was great with stunning views, and remote enough to appreciate the peace and quiet, but also close to the main road and nearby towns for convenience. If you enjoy bird watching, the curlews give an amazing display!

I have stayed at Old Pennistone several times now and will certainly be returning. The cottage is beautifully set, on it own with no close neighbours . There is is an abundance of wildlife around the cottage and there are footpaths leading directly from the door. Towns and villages in the local area and beyond, are easily accessible. The A66 gives access to all points, North, South, east and west, including the Yorkshire Dales, the Lake District and North Pennines. There is a well stocked Minimarket in nearby Brough and also an historic castle, as well as an ice cream parlour. Larger shops and facilities are only a 20 minute drive away at Kirkby Stephen, where you can also join the picturesque Settle to Carlisle railway line. The cottage is always absolutely spotless and well equipped with everything you need for an enjoyable holiday. The owners are always very helpful and welcoming and go out of their way to make your stay enjoyable. Old Pennistone is the perfect place to relax and unwind, with the 'icing on the cake' being the private hot tub with superb views across the valley and hills beyond. Just fantastic, I'll be back!

Me and my partner stayed at Old Pennistone for 4 nights. We were very happy with all aspects of our stay here. The cottage itself was very clean, cosy and overall hugely inviting. The area was very picturesque and the owner was lovely and very relaxed. Overall we had a great time and would love to come here again, maybe next time with friends!
