What we love

Description

Old Dolphin Cottage may be 500 years old but whilst the property takes you back in time, let Cornwall take you forward into relaxation.

Ground floor: Living room. Dining area/kitchen. Bathroom with shower over bath and toilet. Steep stairs to first floor: 2 bedrooms: 1 double leading to 1 twin. Beams throughout.

Partial NSH, electricity, bed linen, towels and Wi-Fi included. Freeview TV. DVD. Microwave. Washer/dryer. Dishwasher. Fridge/freezer. Patio. Car park (permit provided).

An absolute gem! Time seems to have stood still at this truly delightful 500-year old thatched cottage, one of the most photographed in Cornwall. Featuring an ancient inglenook fireplace with an old cloam oven, timber panelled walls and original beams among its many charms, and all complemented with pretty period pieces and interesting artefacts, Old Dolphin Cottage is one of a pair nestling in pretty gardens just 50 yards from the shingle cove. Cadgwith itself is a place for relaxing - a thriving fishing community and one of the county’s most picturesque villages, its whitewashed cottages dot the valley slopes, fishing boats are drawn up on the beach, cream teas and great seafood are available and the locals regularly gather in the pub for an evening of traditional song. Scenic coastal walks lead to sandy beaches and Lizard Point, and a myriad attractions lie within easy reach. Shop 50 yards, pub 150 yards.

A lovely characterful cottage in a beautiful location. We had a wonderful time exploring the stunning coastline of the area and had a cozy retreat at the cottage each evening. A well equipped kitchen for eating in when we wanted. Our only criticism would be the seating was not too comfortable, the sofas in the living room and the dining chairs could do with an update.

If this property was inspected by health & safety I have no doubt that it would fail on a safety aspect of the very hazardous staircase, alone. The steps are extremely steep and it’s easy to hit your head on the door opening unless you are just 4ft in height. The step width is far too narrow and slippery. This is not suitable for young children or seniors without perfect mobility. The lounge sofa is very uncomfortable and the single chairs have completely given way and need new springs. The master bedroom mattress was uncomfortable and gave both myself and my wife back pain by the morning. The bathroom was well laid out as was the kitchen. No complaints there at all. Yes, I had read other reviews about the stale biscuits......I had to smile at the accuracy to taste when I took a bite! It’s all about the small things sometimes. I suspect the caretaker had made an effort to clean but failed to taste the biscuits. The late check-in time with early departure seems unreasonable. We paid peak season price to stay here and left 2 days early due to being so uncomfortable. I tried to talk to the landlord who fobbed me off with the excuse that she is not a mattress factory, it was a waste to discuss any further. I just hope other users share their experience with complete honesty to avoid others experiencing what we did.
