When we eventually found it (!) with the help of the lady at the nearby farm (who was clearly very used to being a 'signpost') Oak Barn was very nice and mostly well-appointed BUT .... The directions for getting there were incomplete and inaccurate to say the least. A sign on the lane pointing to the Barns would be helpful and some mention of using the same entrance as the Vineyard but going straight between Vineyard and Orchard. There were two things that made the accommodation unsuitable for us: We are elderly (70 and 80) and the bare wood staircase with one handrail for most of it and none for part of it was very hazardous. I booked the cottage because it had a room with two single beds. However only one of them was made up and there was no spare bedding so we had to share the double. Very uncomfortable as my husband has Parkinson's Disease with bad dreams and uncontrollable movements! Finally - the shower cubicle doors need replacing as they don't close properly; I had to buy a draining rack for the kitchen sink draining board as it was so slippery (you're welcome!) I'm amazed nothing got broken; a delicate item I put through the washing machine was ruined by having a great many threads pulled in it. So, it was far from the best holiday accommodation we have ever had.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; I am very sorry you had a less than positive experience. Your first inconvenience is also a disappointment to me. Some time ago I notified the rental company re the confusing directions and am sorry that they did not update the details before your visit. I am surprised that both beds were not made up in the single room, it is a real shame that you had to alter your sleeping plans since a call to either the company or me could have resolved this easily. I believe that the website says there are stairs, there is a hand rail for each 4 step section. I visit regularly with my 85 year old father who has had a hip replacement and it had I must admit not occurred to either me or the letting company who review the property annually that they might be an issue. Again I am sorry that you found the stairs a challenge. I hope that in future if someone has issues with stairs they will let me know in advance and I can draw their attention to the fact that there is no carpet. We are visit ourselves soon and will check the shower doors, thank you for highlighting this.

Oak Barn is a clean, cosy and well equipped holiday property situated in a very peaceful location. It is only 4 miles from Padstow with its shops, cafes and pubs, there is also a supermarket on the outskirts (Tesco) so you wont need to bring a car full of supplies to last you the week. Padstow can be very crowded at times, so try nearby Port Isaac, a pretty village and great views from the coastal path. It's best to plan your day carefully as car parking is expensive, parking for longer than 4 hours in most public car parks will cost £6 a time.
