This property is part of our Cottages4you collection

In superb locations and beautiful settings. Cottages4you gives you a fantastic range of hand-picked properties with quality you can rely on.

Enjoy the outdoors, with an enclosed garden to the front, and a wild garden with trees and seating to the rear.

This single-storey, terrace cottage is located in Santon Downham, a long-standing Breckland Village mentioned in the Domesday Book, situated in the heart of Thetford Forest on the Suffolk/Norfolk border. Built as an estate village for Santon Downham Hall, the village lies on the Little Ouse river, an ideal holiday escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. With a large lawned garden to the front and a rear garden with many trees, shrubs and sitting-out areas, it is just a few yards from the river with views of the bridge built by the Canadian army during World War 1 and used in an episode of ‘Dads Army’. Feel free to bring canoes or kayaks, as there is garage storage available. There are many delightful walks to enjoy directly from the cottage and nearby Thetford Forest is ideal for walking and cycling with the Peddars Way footpath and National Cycle Route - also close by is Oxborough Hall (NT). The North Norfolk Coast, Norwich, Sandringham and the Norfolk Boards are less than one hour’s drive. Thetford is 6 miles and Elevedon is about 8 miles. Also within easy driving distance are Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket with its famous racecourse, and Cambridge. Shop 100 yards, pub 2½ miles, restaurant 3 miles.

All on ground floor: Living room with wooden floor/dining room. Kitchen with tiled floor. 2 bedrooms: 1 double (5ft), 1 twin, both with en-suite shower room and toilet. Separate toilet.

Woodburner in living room included. Electric central heating, electricity, bed linen and towels included. DVD (small library). Stereo/CD. Electric cooker. Microwave. Washing machine. Dishwasher. Freezer. Wi-fi.Telephone-incoming calls only. Large, enclosed, lawned garden to front. Wild garden to rear with sitting-out areas and furniture. Parking (2 cars). Cycle store. Welcome pack. No smoking. NB: 2 small ponds in garden.

Comfortable, well-equipped cottage in a beautiful peaceful location which is perfect for getting away from it all. Local amenities a bit sparse, but Thetford and Brandon within easy reach. Feel sure we shall be back.

If you like wildlife & birds there is no better place. Plenty to see in the back/front gardens and in the Little Ouse which is nearby. No need to go anywhere.

Nightjar was a really nice place to spend a week in winter. The cottage was very well equipped and a lovely warm place to return to after a day out. The birds in the garden were numerous and we counted 22 different species during our week. I would have given the cottage full marks but for the fact that the 5 ft bed was in fact slightly less than 4ft 6in and as my husband and I are rather restless sleepers we had to make use of one of the single beds. Having said that, we would stay in Nightjar again.

2nd visit. Wonderful location. Cottage could have been a bit warmer but the owners were really helpful. Still a lovely cottage and will definitely be back.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time in this wonderful cottage. It was home from home, with everything supplied you could possibly ask for. Anne's welcome upon arrival was lovely. She left a large basket of logs and kindling for the wood-burner and explained how we could increase/decrease the thermostat on the central heating. Both very welcomed for a break in the middle of winter. So much nicer than cottages with inaccessible heating controls. I have scored 9 for local amenities as Santon Downham is a very small village but Brandon and Thetford are just a short drive away and they have an abundant supply of supermarkets, pubs and restaurants. You can therefore enjoy the peace and tranquility of life in a tiny village but are still close enough to all you could require. We will hope to return in the future.

Great holiday cottage with all amenities. We really appreciated the Christmas decorations. The wood burning stove was fantastic. Bird watching could have taken up all day if we had let it! We hope to return to see the forest in a different season.
