Moorland Cottage is one of three cottages which are set in the heart of the picturesque North Yorkshire village of Hutton-le-Hole, famous for its meandering beck, old stone cottages and expanse of common land which is kept well-manicured by the resident sheep. The cottage provides the ideal base for walking, cycling, touring and exploring the moors, coast, vale and dale. It has been sympathetically converted from old farm buildings to offer cosy, home from home accommodation. From the doorstep visitors can enjoy the popular Ryedale Folk Museum, tea rooms, craft shops, galleries and the village’s own chocolate factory. The well-established village pub offers a warm welcome and a menu of hearty home-cooked meals. Cyclists are very welcome and there is ample storage for bikes and equipment at the property. There are many cycling trails in Dalby Forest which is just a 20-minute drive away. Walkers are well catered for with fabulous, scenic walking on the doorstep. On-site there is a shared utility room where boots and outdoor clothing can be dried and stored. Visit Pickering (9 miles) and board the famous steam train for a stunning trip through the North York Moors to the fishing port of Whitby. Enjoy the quaint market towns of Kirkbymoorside and Helmsley with their delightful selection of shops, restaurants and inns alongside attractions including the Centre for Birds of Prey and the Walled Garden. The Arts Centre in Helmsley offers a broad range of theatre, music, cinema and exhibitions and throughout the summer months the outdoor swimming pool is popular with children. Historic houses can be found at Castle Howard and Nunnington Hall and there are abbey ruins at Rievaulx and Byland. Family fun can be found at Flamingo Land and Go Ape and there are miles of sandy beaches at the traditional seaside resorts of Scarborough, Whitby and Filey. The ancient city of York is just an hour’s drive. Shop 3½ miles, pub and restaurant 50 yards.
Moorland Cottage can be booked together with Byre Cottage (UK2165) and Heather Cottage (UK2166) to accommodate up to 12 guests.

This was my first visit to Moorland Cottages. Overall Moorland Cottage is a charming cottage situated in the beautiful village of Hutton le hole. It is nicely decorated throughout with modern bedroom furniture and it has a lovely fully tiled bathroom with bath and overhead electric shower. The cottage is very cosy , heated by a very efficient electric heating system. While the kitchen is modern and well equipped we like previous visitors had problems with the fridge / freezer compartment. The freezer badly needed defrosting and the fridge was missing several shelves. As the cottage is approx 9 miles from a supermarket I consider it extremely important that a fully working freezer / fridge is supplied. I personally would have liked to see the tall kitchen storage cupboard removed and replaced with an upright freezer. This would then take away the need for a communal freezer in the laundry room ( which too was in need of a defrost ) . I would also like to see a pair of oven gloves supplied for extra safety. While I throughly enjoyed our stay at Moorland Cottages and would certainly return in the very near future I feel the cottage would benefit from a greater degree of general maintenance. For example the shaver point in the main bedroom was faulty and the light was not working. On arrival we found only one light was working in the hallway , would recommend spare bulbs are made available. During our stay there were some families ( including ourselves) who needed parking for more than one car, here some over grown shrubs in the parking area and driveway made it difficult and could quite easily have caused damage to cars. All in all Moorland Cottages is a charming cottage but with a little more attention to detail would be a holiday cottage to remember for the right reasons.

Response on behalf of the owner; The fridge has been replaced as it had been damaged. We do supply oven gloves, I can't understand how they weren't there. Will investigate. We managed to employ a gardener 2 weeks ago who has improved the area hugely.

The settee is very old and uncomfortable and should be replaced. Mould on net curtains doesn’t look good either. Could do with a decent curtain in main bedroom too. Bathroom lovely. Location great. Hutton-le-hole is lovely. Beds comfortable. Kitchen adequate. Bike storage and boot room etc very good in fact it’s the only reason we have stayed three times as we need the bike storage. Very dusty underneath beds on skirting boards etc WiFi good and TV good quality. Hot water dangerously hot! Generally I think we paid a lot for the standard of the cottage.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you for your comments, we’re glad you enjoyed the fantastic location of the property. We were disappointed to read this review, especially as a number of the points raised could have been addressed during your holiday, should we have been made aware. Our cleaner is very thorough and as is shown in our other reviews, the cleanliness is usually something that we’re commended for. These points will now be looked into further and any changes made as necessary.

Great cottage in the middle of the village, near the pub. Its was our first holiday with a dog and this was a fantastic place with enclosed courtyard, garden area and paddock. The cottage is nice and cosy and was big enough for us , 2 kids and the dog. The bedrooms are lovely and look recently decorated with nice furniture. The bathroom is large and airy. The kitchen / livingroom was fine for our needs but agree the sofa & kitchen (fridge) are a little bit worn but absolutely fine for the time we spent in it. Also has Netflix so kids watched some films whilst we relaxed. We would definitely return and hope to do so for a long weekend next year.
