We were greeted by the gracious hosts on arrival and given a detailed tour of the spacious property and I have to say that the photo's on the website do not really do it justice - it is much better than they show. We were told that we mustn't eat at the stone/concrete table near the pool as it was hard to clean (though I think the 60euro cleaning charge should have covered this especially as were not given clean bed linen for the second week!) and no mention was made of the barbeque. The satellite TV is mostly French and German channels. The owners live on site in the annexe (the reason this property is described as semi detached) which can be useful if you have questions or any problems arise. We were then able to settle in for the rest of the afternoon and enjoy the pool which is an ideal size for our family requirements and great for cooling off in. The property is situated at the top of a very steep hill and provides very good exercise when walking back from the town! There is a very large powerstation just a few miles beyond the hill and one of the cooling towers has an interesting painting on it. It should be noted that shops and restaurant are stated as being 1km away, well maybe as the crow flies but not via the footpath/road which we measured at 1.6km. This brings you to a large supermarket which will have all you will need and also to the stated Restaurant which is actually McDonalds! The proper restaurants are in the town which is just over another kilometre. So if you want to walk out for your evening meal and enjoy a couple of drinks (as we do) then you are looking at a 5.4km (3.3 mile) round trip which finishes with the 1.6km walk up the steep hill. At least you can walk off all the calories straight away! We tried several of the restaurants and whilst they are perfectly ok the food was nothing spectacular. Settling down for a quiet nights sleep is difficult as the extractor fan for the toilet is constantly on and is rather noisy even with all the doors shut and we didn't find the beds overly comfortable but this is obviously down to personal preference. After our first night we went to the supermarket to get some essentials and left the aircon on as we weren't going to be long and the temperature was building towards the predicted 40 degrees. We arrived back about 45 minutes later to be greeted by the host (who would appear to have a smart meter) and were told that he had noticed that the aircon was on and had tripped the electricity in the house in order to turn it off as he didn't know how long we were going to be! We had paid a lot of money to stay at this property with advertised airconditioning and then we are being told when it should be used! We would not have left it on if going out for more than an hour as we are not wasteful so this was a annoying. It also made us feel as though we were being watched which I can partly understand as this is their property but it doesn't help you to relax. This was enhanced a couple of days later when my wife and I decided to enjoy an early evening drink at the table by the pool (which we obediently didn't eat at!). Within 10 minutes the owner had come out to do something unnecessary in that part of the garden making us feel like they were checking we weren't eating. When we came to cook a meal we found that many of the utensils were dirty (still had the remnants of food on them) as well as some of the saucepans along with the drawer they were located in. The oven is rather difficult to work out and there are no instructions. The property is ideally located for trips out to all the great places surrounding this region. As a family we particularly enjoyed Velorail and the day we spent in Lyon. We also did an overnight trip to Turin as this is only 4 hours away. So to sum up, the property is spacious, has a lovely garden, is well located for trips out and the pool is great. On the downside it is at the top of a steep hill, the restaurants are quite a distance and it can feel as if you are being watched. We make sure we enjoy our holidays (though the less effort we have to put into this the better!) but unfortunately I would have this one at the bottom of the list of holidays we have had in France.
