It was the coldest weekend of the year and when we arrived there was no heating on, only one electric fire for the whole of the property. We had to ring and ask for the heat to be put on the second night. There is no heat in the bathroom. The bed was on the floor and inaccessible for myself so I slept on the sofa. All utencils were blunt and no oven for cooking. The shower room was very damp and cold

We stayed at Mini Cottage for 3 nights, and overall our experience was not very good. Mini Cottage is the annex to a larger cottage down at the bottom of a narrow lane to the south of Denver. It is a perfect English country cottage location and setting, with a large garden area, although the noise from the nearby A10 is always present. When we arrived there was no one there to greet us and hand us our key, but then we discovered that the key was in the door so we let ourselves in. There was a plate of cakes left out which was a nice touch. Mini Cottage is very well named - it is even smaller than the pictures would suggest - downstairs there is a lounge/kitchen/diner with a small toilet/shower room off it. There kitchen is adequate - there is a microwave, fridge, toaster, kettle and two ring hob and a tiny sink. The shower room is again adequate with a toilet, sink and shower, albeit that you need to shut the door to get into the shower. The lounge/diner area has a sofa, table for two and tiny TV/DVD player. Whilst it is small the facilities are perfectly adequate for a couple to spend a few days. Upstairs (very narrow stairs at that) is the bedroom - this has a pitched ceiling which is around 6 feet (1.8m) at the apex and drops to floor level at the sides - the bed is ok, but is basically little more than a mattress on the floor. To get into the bed you literally have to crawl along the floor on you hands and knees, watching not to catch yourself on the exposed roof beams. We are both tall people, so this room was a major challenge but there is no way that even average sized people could get dressed upstairs. It was also hot weather when we stayed, and the only window in the bedroom is a tiny Velux rooflight, which provides little ventilation and the small room is very stuffy indeed. PROBLEMS:- Mini cottage is advertised as having free wi-fi, but we couldn't find a router to log onto. It is advertised that there is free range of the garden area (so long as you pick up pet litter), but our experience is that this is not the case, with dogs having to be on leads at all times. The owners keep chickens and we were woken up at about 4am by the cockerel crowing. Another issue with Mini Cottage is communication with the owners - it became apparent to us that the owners son was completely unaware that there was anyone staying in the cottage following an irritable exchange. Thereafter he promised his mother would phone us, and when my partner eventually managed to get her on the phone (around a week after we got home!) she told us that she couldn't speak with us and that we'd need to contact customer care. HOWEVER, the biggest problem with Mini Cottage is the cleanliness. When you first go in there is a strong smell of dampness/mustiness - we aired the place extensively whilst we were there but the smell never went away. The cottage is quaint with wooden beams, but these are utterly infested with cobwebs and clearly haven't been cleaned for a long time. The tiles in the shower are blackened between the joints, and the shower head is secured to the wall with a couple of cable ties. Generally, the whole cottage just isn't properly clean which doesn't make for a comfortable stay. Also, whilst it is a large and potentially lovely garden, it isn't well maintained which takes away from it. Overall, Mini Cottage has the potential to be a lovely little hideaway to spend a few days in - suspect it is too small to make a longer stay comfortable. However, as it is at present, we feel that we would have been cleaner, better and cheaper checking into the local Premier Inn.
