As a group of friends we stayed in Horsemans, and the owners other two properties (please see Mill Cottage and Stable Cottage). To say that we were disappointed with a property would be an understatement. From the start, contacting the owner to inform her of our arrival time was hard work. She was incredibly rude and unfriendly. She gave us a very inflexible and unreasonable window of time in which to arrive at the cottages, despite the fact that we were travelling over 500 miles to be there and in a number of car parties and with small children. Fortunately one of our party was able to accommodate this unreasonable time frame and was able to collect the keys for all three properties. I was however chastised later for each individual member of the group not coming to introduce ourselves to her personally. On asking if she provided a travel cot in any of the properties, she didn’t which wasn’t a problem as we were prepared to bring our own but she felt it necessary to give a very lengthy lecture about her insurance not allowing babies in beds (hence why we were asking about a travel cot!!) and falsely accused us of bringing extra people over what we had booked. When we arrived at the cottages we were even more disappointed. Please see Stable and Mill Cottage reviews for more specific comments on them but Horseman’s Cottage was the cleaner property of the three but smelt very unpleasant - very foisty and it is very, very dated. All this would have been bearable without a phone call a week after our return claiming that WE had left the properties in an unacceptable state! She claimed it had taken her a lengthy time to clean after we had left even though we had all thoroughly cleaned the properties to a standard some might say was better than on arrival and despite the fact that the booking agreement clearly states the fee included a charge for cleaning, so we should not have been expected to clean the properties to an immaculate standard (her specifics were that the shower wasn’t sparkling (!), we hadn’t emptied the water from the dryer (which fair enough we hadn’t done but will have taken her seconds to do) and that the tea towels (of which she had provided one already grubby tea towel!) were unclean!). I have never been more disappointed with a property and especially the rude behaviour of the owner. If you don’t mind grubby, extremely dated properties to stay in go for it, but be prepared for a mid-holiday inspection (yes, she called around on some pretext of sorting key drop offs but very clearly was sizing the places up as she later made comments about things being untidy and out of place when she had called) and probably a phone call a week later complaining that you didn’t shine the shower screen before you left. If you are a more reasonable sort and that doesn’t sound like your cup of tea, then I recommend that you keep well away!
