Description

This lovely thatched cottage enjoys its own 1-acre meadow, perfect for playing games or just relaxing in the sun.

Meadow Cottage belies its understated name. This thatched cottage is in fact the south wing of one of Devon’s finest examples of an historic open hall house, set within 22 acres of stunning countryside with origins dating back to the 15th century. As you arrive at the property, you will pass through and past a fine array of historic and impressive thatched buildings, one of which houses the owner’s micro-brewery. There are so many reasons to enjoy a holiday at Meadow Cottage, not only are you staying in a part of Devon’s rich history, but you also have use of your own private 1-acre meadow. Just a short walk from the front door, this large quiet open space compliments the private and cosy surroundings of the cottage perfectly. The meadow has views towards Dartmoor and there is plenty of space to walk and run around, or find a quiet shady spot to finish a book or simply to let the shutters come down!
Located just outside the busy village of North Tawton, the cottage is perfectly located to get out and about and see all Devon has to offer. Okehampton, the gateway to Dartmoor, is a short distance away and as well as having a good selection of shops and amenities it has very good access onto Dartmoor to enjoy the dramatic landscape this National Park provides. There is also Okehampton Castle which is worth a visit, and a walk along the old railway to Meldon Reservoir, which has some stunning views, and not forgetting nearby National Trust Castle Drogo. The location of the cottage makes it an ideal base from which to explore the north Cornwall and Devon areas. There are stunning beaches at Woolacombe and Sandymouth. Enjoy a day out at Hartland and visit the Lighthouse, Hartland Quay and the historic fishing village at Clovelly. If gardens are of interest, you will found the RHS gardens at Rosemoor a delight and there are numerous National Trust properties in the surrounding area to enjoy. Other highlights in the local area include Roadford Lake and Dingles Steam Museum, while other activities include golf and horse riding, or hire a bike and explore the Tarka Trail. Shop, pub and restaurant 2 miles.

The cottage was clean, comfortable and well equipped. The owners were there if you needed them but never intruded on your stay. On arrival a Devon cream tea was waiting which was a lovely touch. The cottage is ideally placed to explore all areas of Devon and I would not hesitate to stay again. The cottage is situated not in a tourist area and therefore no tourist traffic to negotiate. Ten out of ten for a brilliant holiday we were sad to come home.

Meadow Cottage is set in a beautiful place pretty much in the middle of no where but with easy access to local places, Dartmoor and the coast. These guys are living my dream and it's wonderful to rent a little part of that, even for a weekend. The cottage is clean, homely and comfortable. The chip shop in North Tawton does the best food. The little woodland is just beautiful. For the dog owners out there - this is a MUST. The private meadow that comes with the cottage is incredible. Our 6 month old puppy loved it so much he actually seemed disappointed by our garden when we got home. Pretty sure his own meadow will be on his Christmas list this year. Only things to be aware of: it can get cold. It wasn't a problem for us but the puppy woke up extra early because he was cold. We'll take more blankets next time. And the stairs are wood so can be slippery, one to think about if you have a big elderly dog (our pup refused to go up them but thankfully this was before his big growth spurt). We'll definitely be back when the pup's older.

Another lovely surprise location - Marc and Amy were suitably "invisible" but always available - and the sun shone!

Meadow Cottage is in an ideal location for exploring the South West area. As it is fairly central the north and south coasts are easily accessible as well as both Exmoor and Dartmoor. Cycling in the area is excellent as is walking. There are so many opportunities for things to do you couldn't get bored. The cottage was very comfortable with everything you could possibly need. The owners were very welcoming. The cottage and surrounding buildings have a lot of history to them.
