Description

Great for the family, this comfortable cottage is close to Hunstanton and is suitable for those with children.

Mallards is a comfortable holiday cottage and is part of a lovely range of converted, traditional, 17th-century chalk and flint barns, set in their own maintained grounds in Thornham on the North Norfolk Coast, an area noted for its natural beauty, wildlife and relaxed atmosphere. Mallards sleeps 8 and there is also accommodation for an infant in the cot provided. The ground floor consists of a kitchen, lobby and large living room with exposed beams, wooden floors, inglenook and wood-burning stove (fuel available at the nearby deli/shop). Both bath/shower rooms are also equipped with heated towel rails. There is also a clothes horse on site for drying clothes outside in sunny weather. Outside, the cottage has front and rear gardens. Sliding doors open onto the front lawned garden which catches the morning sun. To the rear, a standing barbecue is built into the wall of the yard, which catches the evening sun in spring and summer. Thornham is a charming, picturesque and quiet village, close to the old harbour and sea, and is surrounded by open countryside. There are lovely ancient trackways and coastal walks along dunes and sweeping beaches, with bird watching available at nearby Titchwell, Redwell Marsh and Scolt Head nature reserves. There are three traditional pub restaurants in the village which welcome children and serve excellent Norfolk food and real ale. Dogs are also welcome in the bar areas. The friendly village deli/shop provides for day-to-day needs of groceries, newspapers, etc, and there is also a bistro. A well-equipped play area is available near to the deli, which is a 2-minute walk from Mallards, off road and across a green. Thornham’s tennis court is available for hire at short notice (rackets and balls not supplied). Major supermarkets and shopping are available a 10-minute drive away in nearby Hunstanton, a charming old world seaside town with entertainment for adults and children, including beachfront amusements, fun fair, swimming pool, bowling alley, bandstand concerts on the green and a sea life centre. Further afield there are many old villages and market towns to explore, such as Wells, Burnham Market, Holt and the birthplace of Nelson, Burnham Thorpe, where the parish church lectern is said to be made from timbers taken from his ship HMS Victory. Nearby stately homes with gardens are open to the public, such as Houghton, Holkham and the Queen’s country estate at Sandringham. Brancaster Staithe is available for dinghy sailing, sailboard hire (tuition available) and boat trips, including seal watching. Two local golf courses welcome visitors. Fresh fish and seafood is available in Brancaster.

Ground floor: (suitable for less mobile). Twin bedroom. Beamed living room with wood-burning stove in inglenook fireplace, patio doors to front garden and wooden floor. Well-fitted, spacious kitchen/dining room. Shower room with walk-in shower (with seat) and toilet. First floor: Three bedrooms; two double, one bunk. Bathroom with shower attachment and toilet.

We had a wonderfully relaxing stay at Mallards cottage and it is in a beautiful setting. The access through the back field was great for giving the dogs a quick walk and made accessing the deli and bus stops very quick. The beach at Thornham is breathtakingly beautiful and definitely worth the walk. We also had much fun in the mud flats crabbing and exploring. The cottage was so inviting and comfortable that at times we found it hard to pull ourselves away to go exploring. My reason for scoring location an 8 was purely personal due to the coastal hopper bus stopping quite early in the evening which cut you off from close by Hunstanton and Wells-next-the-sea early in the evening (around 6) unless you wanted to drive. I rated local amenities a 9 purely because to reach the chip shop and farm store you do for a very short while have to walk a very busy road with no pavement and believe me though a little pricey they are well worth the visit as is the local caught fish shack there where we bought a beautiful lobster!! I would highly recommend you visiting this beautiful, cosy, homely, family friendly cottage which is very spacious with a wonderful enclosed garden.

Response on behalf of the owner: Thank you very much for your feedback, we are pleased you had a pleasant stay. For future reference, you do not need to walk along the busy road, there is a public footpath behind the hedge at the side of the road, that is signposted.

A lovely cottage for a peaceful, relaxing break. Plenty of things to keep children occupied only a short walk across the green. Good local deli, cafe and we especially appreciated take away fish and chips on our first evening. Other places of interest and excellent beaches nearby. We spent a whole morning exploring rock pools, etc with our 3 and 5 year old grandchildren even on a cool, cloudy day. Patios at the cottage with big tables front and back, catch any sun around and make eating outside a pleasant experience. The grounds around are beautifully kept and people are friendly.

Nice cottage overall but the bedding needs updating. Some sun loungers would also have been nice

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; The bed linen at Mallards Cottage was replaced in its entirety (duvet covers, pillow slips, undersheets), as well as all the towels, with two new sets in March 2017, just prior to the beginning of the peak booking season, which means the linen and the towels are just 4 months old. The linen and towels have been inspected and are in fine condition. So I’m afraid the guest’s comment is unfounded. The property underwent its annual inspection by the Regional Manager in early July 2017 (this includes bedding, fixtures, fittings, equipment, decor, furniture) and everything was found to be fully in order and consistent with its rating and the standards expected by English Country Cottages and we were congratulated by the Regional Manager on the high standards consistently maintained at the cottage. With regard to sun loungers, these are not provided for a simple reason: as they would require covers/cushions, it would not be possible to leave these outside in all weathers as they would inevitably get wet and cause problems. Nor could guests be expected to bring them in under cover when not in use. There are, however, plenty of seats outside for guests to enjoy the sun. Nowhere on our cottage details do we state that sun loungers are provided, but of course guests are welcome to bring their own if they so desire.
