Located within the Dartmoor National Park, this semi-detached cottage has an open fire and enclosed courtyard for al-fresco dining.

Lillian’s Cottage is a comfortable semi-detached cottage, suitable for two couples or a family. The cottage is in the heart of the beautiful Dartmoor village of Dunsford, and is ideal for year round holidays. A gate from the pavement leads into the walled, paved courtyard garden, ideal for outdoor dining. The living room has exposed beams and an inglenook fireplace, which still has the original bread-oven. Dunsford lies inside the Dartmoor National Park and many of its houses are of traditional cob and thatch. Here the River Teign emerges from its moorland course at Steps Bridge, ½ mile from the village, and flows from the thickly wooded Teign Valley. Upstream from Steps Bridge, the scenery is spectacular with Castle Drogo (National Trust) crowning the gorge above the renowned beauty spot of Fingle Bridge. To the west of Dunsford the road climbs up through woods to Moretonhampstead, 15 minutes, a small Dartmoor town and the open moor. Here there are several restaurants, shops and a small supermarket. Needless to say, the whole area is a walker’s and rider’s paradise. The village itself clusters around the ancient church of St. Mary, and in 2010 won the award for ’Best Kept Village’ in Devon. Dunsford has kept its village shop and Post Office and has a pub and a beautiful walled garden restaurant, where diners can sample tasty day-time meals and pre-book for an evening meal when customers may bring their own wine. The village garage still sells petrol! Lying off the Exeter to Moretonhampstead road, there is little through traffic allowing walkers and horse riders to enjoy the calm of high hedged Devon lanes. Guests will usually be able to park directly outside Lillian’s Cottage, but occasionally a few yards either up or down the road. Dunsford is a quiet village whose cottages were built in an era when transport was either horse drawn or on foot rather than wheels! Beach 15 miles. Shop and restaurant 50 yards, pub 40 yards.

On arrival there was a fresh cake made by the owner. Fabulous. Would suggest that prior to stay to pick up some basic shopping. Local shop may have some items. However, you may need to go back to Exeter for major groceries.

The owner was very accommodating and helpful with a whole file of useful information such as nearest butchers or supermarket; places to go; things to see. As we were late getting there and she had no bookings for the following week she allowed us to stay an extra day, at no extra charge. It was a very quiet, small village, which only has a bus once or twice a day, so you would need to have transport (or be an excellent walker!!) to book there The only outdoor space was a small walled courtyard which did have table and chairs, but was quite dark. However, approx. 50 yard away in one direction is a secret garden which serves cream teas and has birds coming all around and in the other is the village green. There were only two minor issues. The beds in the 2nd bedroom would be fine for children but the mattresses were a little on the thin side for two adults. 2nd issue where the towels which were extremely rough, and although there were enough of them, we needed to put them through the washer/drier before we used them otherwise it would have been like using sandpaper to dry on.
