Lilla Cottage is nestled in the beautiful Esk Valley with stunning views over Westerdale and the open countryside which makes this part of the North York Moors so beautiful. Lilla Cottage was built in the 1800s and still holds some of its original character with a homely feel and stylish touches. There are some excellent footpaths in the area which stretch out across the National Park. A scenic drive along the country roads takes you to some pretty villages dotted around the North Yorkshire Moors, and also to the historic port of Whitby, with its quaint cobbled streets and magnificent abbey. It is also home to the bi-annual Goth festival and the Whitby Regatta. The cobbled back streets of the old town boast numerous bizaares, jet shops, pubs and restaurants, as well as 3 miles of beach to explore. The Victorian seaside town of Saltburn-by-the-Sea is only a short drive away, with its golden sandy beach and lovely promenade, ideal for a stroll on a warm summer’s evening. The North Yorkshire Moors steam train is a great day out for everyone, travelling from Whitby to the market town of Pickering stopping at Grosmont and Goathland (also known as Heartbeat Country) along the way. There are many hidden seaside villages along the Heritage Coast such as Staithes and Robin Hoods Bay, each with their own story to tell. The medieval walled city of York is just over an hour away where you can go back in time at Jorvik Viking Centre and the National Rail Museum. Also nearby are the theme parks of Lightwater Valley and Flamingo Land - fantastic days out for all the family. Beach 13 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 2 miles.

I failed to realise the remoteness of the Yorkshire dales fortunately it was summer and the weather was great so no problem for us but I suspect the roads could be tricky with ice etc in winter. The cottage was lovely but immediately on entering there was a very musty smell so the heating hadn’t been on in a while which is to be expected given it’s a holiday home and unreasonable to expect heating to be on every day. Lovely scenery & walks, so peaceful & quiet. All round a good mini break. Would recommend
