This property is part of our English Country Cottages collection

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Romantic countryside retreat with unique décor located on a peaceful estate abundant in wildlife.

These tasteful, character holiday cottages are set within the grounds of Lemmington Hall amongst the unspoilt Northumbrian countryside. Each cottage has its own individual charm with cosy and elegant interiors carefully designed by the owner. Forge Cottage (ref MVN) is the largest, a beautiful detached cottage with uninterrupted views of the Cheviot Hills, and was formerly the stone-built home of the blacksmith of this charming country estate. The quaint and charming pair of Grade II listed, single-storey, adjoining cottages, Thimble (ref MVV) and Button (ref MVU), designed specifically for couples to offer a romantic country life experience, retaining charm and quirkiness. Peacocks wander nearby, with red squirrels and deer in the woods. The properties are ideally located to explore the abundance of visitor attractions, with Alnwick (the ducal town), only 4 miles away where a visit to the castle and enchanting water gardens is a must, not to mention the Treehouse restaurant. The Heritage Coast, with miles of golden sandy beaches, peppered with friendly villages and historic castles, is only a 20-minute drive. Shop 4 miles, pub 3 miles.

Open-plan living/dining room with wood-burning stove and rugs on wooden floor, and kitchen area with wooden floor. Double bedroom with 5ft bed, TV and en-suite bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet.

Great local scored low on local amenities but that’s what we wanted. As put in the sticks. Very secluded a great get away. Alnwick is a 10 min taxi ride away. Everything was thought of by the owners a cute little cottage with everything you need inside. Will be back again.

The cottage was full of old cobwebs that I’m sure could have been vacuumed away. There were dead flies all over window sill. It could have been the time of year but there where also huge spiders crawling the walls. The bed was uncomfortable with the mattress pretty much collapsing on itself with body weight - and I am only a small build. I found a black hair on the pillow on arrival (we are both blonde) which made me question if the sheets had actually been changed from the previous occupants. The second evening I found cobwebs near my pillow. The location of the cottage was good - a 10min car ride from Alnwick. The kitchen had a good range of utensils, pots and pans (although we took our own) and the mini hamper was a nice touch. It is a shame about the cleanliness as it was a really lovely cottage. For this reason we wouldn’t be going back for a second stay.

Well-appointed cottage set in a very pretty location. The roaming peacocks and grouse were particularly lovely. Unfortunately the cottage was let down slightly by poor cleanliness (a lot of cobwebs and a smell of urine in the bathroom) and some of the equipment/furniture not in full working order (tin opener broken and fridge setting not right meaning our bottle of welcome milk turned sour before we were able to use it). We also asked for a travel cot and high chair for our baby, and fortunately we didn’t need to use the high chair as rather disappointingly it was absolutely filthy and clearly had not been cleaned for some time (if ever!) The cottage is very cosy, only three rooms in total; kitchen and lounge area, bedroom and bathroom. This is fine for a couple but we found it a bit of a squeeze with our baby, especially as access to the bathroom is through the bedroom so once we had put our little one to bed we had to be careful when walking through from the lounge and using the bathroom facilities in case of waking him. You can clearly see why this cottage has had so many good reviews, it has real character and has been sympathetically decorated with the wood burner etc. If the minor issues were rectified we would certainly return.

A wonderfully relaxing stay at a truly charming cottage.

A small, unique and beautiful property in a lovely setting. A slight lack of storage available for visitors' own belongings and dried food. Daily visits from the white peacock were a highlight. The cottages appear to be isolated but Alnwick is only a few miles away and had supermarkets and fuel, plus lots of independent shops. All the resorts on the coast, from Bamburgh to Amble, are within easy travelling distance by car.
