The nearby cathedral town of Lisieux is steeped in history and is home to a colourful weekly street market in July and August. One of France’s most famous harbour towns is also close by, Honfleur, an icon of the picturesque, has been the subject of many an artists work for generations. Its mixture of old world panache and cosmopolitan café culture should not be missed.

The character of this cottage is all outside, inside was functional but bland, a few home touches would have been nice. We didn't realise the ground floor bedroom would be separate from the bathroom and toilet which was a small issue for my disabled mother but still a problem at 3am, but perhaps this was our fault for not reading the description properly. The pool was lovely but when we had an issue, the owner unfortunately did not respond to our text message (sent in French). The nearest boulongerie was a 10 minute drive, not far but it was often shut, there were no other shops in this small village so we often had to drive 20 minutes just to buy the basics. The biggest issue for us was the separate charge for electricity which we thought excessive. We were really careful not to use the electric oven, dishwasher and washing machine too often and in fact only used the oven 3 times, dishwasher 4 times and washing machine twice. Despite this we were charged the full deposit of £140 which I find extremely expensive for a two week stay for just 3 people. The best bit about this cottage is the pool and grounds, it would be great for a family who just want to spend most of their time outside and not worry too much about sightseeing. Overall we enjoyed our stay at Le Pre Du Bois, which was helped greatly by hot weather, however, because of the above observations we would not return.

A great place if you want peace and quiet. I would definitely stay there again. But easy to drive to other places for things to do. One thing missing is internet access if travelling with older children as mobile data was intermittent. Also the cost of utilities might be more than €10 a day as it was in our case due to the cost of heating the pool. Not a problem for us as it was worth it with having children.

This was without doubt the best week my family and I have spent in France. The property is beautifully restored and fitted out with modern, fully-working equipment. The bedrooms are spacious and the beds comfortable and the kitchen appliances all worked perfectly, which in our experience is not a given. The pool was simply glorious; always heated to the perfect temperature to complement the weather. We were very lucky to have a predominantly sunny week (and one terrific thunderstorm) and in such conditions this was the ideal property, with the interior remaining reasonably cool despite the lack of air conditioning. We had noted the lack of fans and duly brought our own. Guests need to be aware of what is not provided. As well as fans, there were absolutely no condiments of any kind. In our experience it is unusual not to have a bit of salt, pepper or oil for cooking, often left behind by previous guests, but it is as if everything had been swept clean and we started from scratch. Once a good grocery shop had been done at the excellent Intermarche in Lisieux (the L'Eclerc is bigger and better, but further away) we were fine. The only real negative, which other visitors have noted, are the additional charges. I was prepared for the cost of bedding (10 Euros per person), and that we would need to pay for the property to be cleaned at the end of the holiday. This is always disproportionately expensive but we simply refuse to spend our last day cleaning. 60 Euros was perhaps a little steep however, as we didn't leave the place untidy. The one that really floored me was the electricity, gas and water charge, which I was presented with on our final evening. This came to over 60 Euros and I simply do not have the French to debate the point, so glumly handed it over. As I say, this is the only real negative and should not detract from an excellent holiday. Other visitors have noted the lack of wifi, which is well documented and should not therefore come as a surprise (my children actually read books!), and the remote location, which can be seen on a map and should also therefore not startle anyone. It is not overlooked or even close to many other properties, and to my mind that is perfect. Thank you Johann for a fabulous week, from which we were really sad to return home. My only real suggestions would be to include the utility charges in the overall cost so as to not leave a sour taste at the end of the holiday (you'll know the average costs by now), and maybe add salt and pepper cellers in the kitchen!

Fantastic holiday. Fantastic cottage. All rooms were a good size and heated pool was great. We had a super week there. Highly recommend and no doubt we will be going again in the future. The only 2 downsides are there is no WiFi (& 4g signal is poor inside). And it is a little in the middle of nowhere, a car is essential with a 15 minute drive to the nearest town and supermarket. We did a couple of lovely day trips to the coast (50 min drive) However, we knew both of these facts before we went so was prepared.
