Description

Enjoy stunning views from this elevated 18th century manor house, with a walnut grove and swimming pool.

An impressive 18th century manor house built from the traditional honey coloured stone in an elevated position on a hillside with extensive views over the Dordogne Valley and the local countryside beyond. The rooms are spacious, with stripped wooden floorboards, antique furniture and wall tapestries that retain the original character and charm of the old building but provide comfortable accommodation with all modern amenities. The mature grounds feature a terrace with fine views, a walnut grove, help yourself in season, and an attractive pool area. Here you can relax and unwind, enjoying a formal dinner in the rustic dining room or lingering over a barbecue on the terrace. It is an ideal base from which to explore the spectacular and historic towns, villages and châteaux of the picturesque River Dordogne Valley.

Approximate distance to Bergerac airport is 55 km.

This property looked tidy from the outside but inside is where the problems lie. There were cobwebs in every room of the house which had obviously been there a long while and it is generally tired. There was no room in cupboards in the kitchen to put food items etc. As they were full of various bits and bobs. We had seen on a previous review that the pool had been damaged but did not realise it needed to be topped up quite so much making the water cold each day so it didn't really warm up despite the sun. The bedding on one of the beds had marks on it so we washed it ourselves and re-made the bed. The three chairs in the living room are very uncomfortable and there is no TV, although the internet did work ok in the Living room and Dining room. This house needs an upgrade two comfortable sofas and a TV would make a massive difference together with a good clean. There is no sound proofing between floors and only one bathroom in which the toilet wobbles and takes many minutes to refill, this is not really adequate for the seven people it accommodates. It would be fairly straight forward to create 1 or 2 ensuite rooms and a corridor to prevent people walking through one of the bedrooms. We looked through the house book which displayed the national holidays from 1994!!! And had no information about equipment in the house hence we could not turn on the heating when the temperature dropped to 8 degrees on three occasions over the fortnight. one? It is surrounded by other holiday cottages which all have satellite, tv etc.

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for taking the time to share your feedback. I am sorry the guest could find nothing redeeming about our 18th Century home in the Dordogne countryside. It is in the countryside and cobwebs seem to appear out of nowhere even after a good clean. If they felt the house is “tired” I would need more specifics if I am to address this issue. It is not a modern house and I did try to decorate in the style of the period and area. It is advertised as having antiques. As to the kitchen cupboards being full of “bits and bobs”; to outfit a kitchen for 7 takes a fairly large amount of gear, dishes, cookware, etc. I have also tried to equip the kitchen with some time saving gadgets. We will be putting some of those away in the back kitchen where they would be available if wanted. When the leak was discovered (during the 2017 season), the best solution all parties came up with was for the guest to top it off. We informed the guests and they seemed okay with it. Our caretaker takes great pride in taking care of the pool, gardens and house. The pool liner was repaired at the end of the rental season. The house is not advertised as having a TV; that should not have come as a surprise. The sofa was purchased new about 2 ½ years ago. We find it very comfortable. The antique chairs are not the most comfortable, I agree, but are period pieces. We can investigate replacing those. As for the bookshelf; guests leave behind items they are done reading. The website quite clearly states that there is 1 bathroom, as well as the W/C on the main floor. It is also pointed out on the website that access to the 3rd larger bedroom is through the smaller room with twin beds. There is an information booklet for the various features of the house. In the summer guests are asked to contact our caretaker regarding the heating system as it is set to a certain temperature and no higher: so guests don’t forget they have it on and go off for the day. No one wants a surprise heating bill.
