This semi-detached Victorian villa offers great family-friendly holiday accommodation and is ideally situated on the main road between the popular resorts of Shanklin and Sandown. Shanklin, known for its sandy beach and clear waters, has a pretty old village with thatched cottages, tea rooms and restaurants. Sandown is also within easy reach of the property. The Needles, with chair lift, amusement park, boat rides, lighthouse and coloured sands of Alum Baym is a short distance away. Also within an easy drive are Carisbrooke Castle and Osborne House and Gardens. Blackgang Chine and island attractions such as Ventnor Botanical Gardens, Isle of Wight Pearl, Dinosaur Isle and a donkey sanctuary are all easily accessible. Beach 400 yards. Shop, pub and restaurant 500 yards.

    The house is very well equipped, with very comfortable beds and seating, good quality towels, etc. Internet speed is very good. The only reason for deducting any marks is that the house is on a major road and there is no direct access to the shared garden. Ideal for adults or older children, but perhaps less so for toddlers. There is a good 'corner shop' across the road but other amenities are a good walk/short drive away.

    We really enjoyed our stay in Lavender House. We were two adults and two children (8 and 10). The downstairs bedroom with bunkbeds is very small however worked fine for one very tidy child. The Playstation and XBox are in fact no longer available in the house which was disappointing but did not affect our enjoyment of our stay. The house is very comfortable, and nicely decorated with a well-equipped kitchen, although the fridge-freezer and dishwasher were rather small. The location is excellent, within 15 minutes' walk to the beach via the cliff path. It is also easy to walk into Shanklin for shops/pubs/restaurants. There's a useful 24-hour shop a couple of minutes away. We were aware of the location on the main road, however, hadn't realised the Ryde International Scooter Rally was taking place over the bank holiday weekend, so the extra two-wheel traffic increased the noise levels over three days. The double glazing helped!

    Greeted by the caretaker who lives in the flat underneath the house, welcome pack which included tea, coffee, milk and wine was nice. Bit misguided as having a dog I thought I would be able to open a back door to access the shared garden but instead you have to go out of the front door, which is on a main road and access the side gate via a key code to enter the garden. Was reassured the garden would be for our sole use if needed, bbq etc but felt a bit awkward and intrusive to be honest, as it was right outside their flat, hence their washing was out and they have a dog too. Not a major problem, just made me get up and walk out with the dog which we both enjoyed! Small bedroom downstairs containing bunk beds wasn't used, would be better converted to a shower room, especially having 2 teenagers, always a queue for the bathroom! Could do with some juice glasses too as only supplied small tumblers or pint pots. This is just my opinion, by no means did it hinder or spoil our holiday, the house is very comfortable, clean and bright. Great location, road across from the house takes you to the beautiful coastal path with amazing views, lovely cafes and access to the beach stretching across to Sandown. Shanklin town centre 15 min walk. Shanklin was a great base to explore this charismatic island, we would definitely return but probably opt for a different base, just to be a bit more doggy friendly.
