Kirby is a Victorian house and its front room reflects this. The top floor twin room would be a delight for Middle School aged children. It was comfy and warm in this cold, wet, late-March week. Just outside is the mediaeval village of Porlock with its cafes, shops and walks. In a week you can only see a small percentage of the delights the area has to offer.

Good cottage overall in the very centre of the village. Parking OK in winter, but I guess could be difficult in peak season. Be aware that the house has lots of hunting photos and pictures displayed which some would find off-putting. Yard small for our dog.

This cottage is a perfect base from which to explore Porlock and the area of Exmoor around it. It is well equipped, with a functional kitchen and a welcome wood stove in the lounge (though the settee & arm chairs were too soft for my old bones after a hike). The upstairs is bright and offers plenty of room, with two double bedrooms + two baths. The steep stairs are only to the third level loft with two single beds (which we didn't use). The village is quieter in this season than in summer but still offers plenty of good food to eat & shops to visit. You can set off on foot from the front door to walk down to the beach (15 mins); to Porlock Weir or Horner for scrumptious cream teas; to the gorgeous Holnicote estate woods and Selworthy beacon; or to the moors and Dunkery beacon (5h30 mins). A dog walker's heaven. Thank you Charlotte (owner & next door neighbour) for your warm welcome.
