Known as the ’Capital of the Cotswolds’, Cirencester is a centre of vibrant cultural life known for its beautiful limestone town houses, exciting boutiques, restaurants, and cafés. The newly refurbished marketplace hosts a market twice a week and a farmer’s market every other Saturday. Cirencester has the remains of one of the largest Roman amphitheatres in Britain which was built in the early 2nd Century, when the Roman City of Corinium (now Cirencester) was second only to London in size and importance.
After the Roman army left Britain it was fortified against Saxon invaders. St Michael’s and Cirencester Parks offer wonderful green spaces to be enjoyed by all with tennis courts, children’s obstacle courses and numerous walking trails. Sporting opportunities are abundant in the area with the Cotswold Leisure Centre in the heart of town; a super open-air swimming pool which is highly recommended; nearby golf courses in Baunton, Minchinhampton and Naunton and sailing and water sports can be enjoyed at the Cotswold Water Park. Other beautiful small Cotswold villages, all within a short car journey away are Bourton on The Water, Northleach, Bibury, Burford and Fairford.
