We had a great time in good weather and enjoyed walking on the Simonside Hills, at Kielder water and along the beautiful Northumberland coast. There was plenty of bird table activity but we were disappointed not to see a red squirrel. The cottage was excellent, apart from the king bed, which is viciously hard! Having seen comments on other people's reviews about this, we took a spare duvet with us to put under the sheet, but in the end we had to add the duvets from the two single beds as well. A mattress enhancer would be a worthwhile investment in our opinion.

What a beautiful cottage in a stunning location. If you want to get away from it all then this is the best place to do it. The cottage has everything you can think of and more the only (tiny) downside was the bed in the master bedroom as it was very hard but we got used to it. We loved our week there and will definitely book again.

We had a lovely week at Squirrel Cottage. It is a bit off the beaten track but that suited us; the views are stunning and it's lovely and peaceful. We had garden visits from red squirrels and many small birds as well as a woodpecker. The main bedroom is spacious and nice, though the bed is pretty hard. The twin room is also nice and ideal for my kids, though adults might struggle with headroom. The sunroom was my favorite room and I really enjoyed sitting in there, watching the wildlife come and go. The kitchen is small and a bit cramped if you are thinking of spending much time in there but that's not my idea of a holiday! It's about a 10-15 minute drive to the town of Rothbury which has quite a few shops and services. The people are friendly and helpful; a garage there replaced a punctured car tyre for us. Squirrel Cottage was ideal for our holiday, a comfortable and beautiful base in-between our days out in Northumberland. It wasn't spotlessly clean, nor did it need to be, I'm glad the owners are allowing guests to stay there. It is a countryside location on a farm estate so you have to be prepared to share the cottage with a few spiders and bugs! Cragside is nearby and well worth a visit. Alnwick isn't too far away either for visiting the castle or the amazing gardens there. Thanks for a brilliant holiday :)
