A modest holiday home in the quiet village of Gilcrux, the ideal touring base for discovering much of the North West.

Ideal touring location

Set in the small traditional village of Gilcrux, just outside the north west Lake District National Park, these three attractive holiday homes are well furnished and equipped in a contemporary style and were finalists in the Cumbria Tourism Awards 2016. Hollybank House (ref 29408) has an eleven-seater silver screen cinema room with projection and sound system adaptable to DVDs, Playstation and Xbox (not supplied). Hollybank Cottage (ref 26811) has the added bonus of a games room whilst Holly Cottage (ref 25859) provides compact holiday accommodation. Gilcrux is an ideal location for touring the highlights of Northern England. Both the western and northern lakes are close by with Bassenthwaite, 6 miles, and Buttermere, 12 miles. The traditional market town of Cockermouth, the birthplace of William Wordsworth, and the bustling lakeside town of Keswick both have a wide selection of attractions, and are within a 20-minute drive. Birdwatching and coastal walking can be enjoyed along the Solway, 4 miles. The city of Carlisle, 15 miles, with castle and excellent museum is a good starting point for discovering the World Heritage Site of Hadrian’s Wall, with its interesting exhibition and the history of the Border Reivers from nearby Scotland. The Northumberland National Park, Eden Valley and the North Pennines are all within a scenic drive. Shops 3 miles, pub and restaurant 200 yards.

    Nice cottage and v clean and reasonably well equipped. No homely touches (the only pictures on the wall are to advertise another cottage!) but it is good value for money. It was v cold when we arrived, even though it was exactly the time we specified we'd arrive, so took a while to warm the place up, which was a shame. It is a lovely part of the country to explore. We'd planned to leave at 10am as required but the owner arrived before 10am on the day we were leaving so we did feel a bit rushed out and ended up leaving couple of things in the fridge that we'd planned to pick up on the way out. We usually use air bnb so this felt a bit more business like than we are used to but not a big deal. I'm sure most people would find it a reasonable place to stay for a weekend.

I’m sorry you never thought there were any homely touches, however, most people prefer the cottage not to be cluttered. I’m sorry you found the cottage cold when you arrived, and even though we may know what time you will arrive, we are not always on hand to turn up the heating for your arrival, but I hope it didn’t take too long to heat up for you. I was surprised at your comment that you felt I was rushing you on the morning you left, but if I’m available I do like to call on my guests to make sure they had a lovely time and to wish them a safe journey home, and in no way would I ever want my guests to feel that I am rushing them, and can only apologise if you felt that I was rushing you.

    Good location as a base to visit all parts of the Northern Lakes, the coast and the Lake District generally. Although within the village, cottage private and area quiet which we liked. The cottage, while small, was adequate for our needs ie two people and a small dog but some aspects need attention eg shower and also towel rails needed. Private shared garden was nice but unable to use wooden garden furniture as it required a thorough clean. Beds very comfortable and towels and bed linen very nice. Voucher provided by owners to get 10% reduction on a meal at neighbouring pub, The Masons Arms, which is a lovely pub with great food. There are few local amenities but none were expected as the cottage is based in a small village.
