‘‘...imbued with noble history...set in a dramatic and varied landscape...’’

Take a beautiful Peak District National Park setting, just 3½ miles from Bakewell, add a historic hall (first recorded in the Domesday Book), and an ancient cluster of listed buildings converted to form superb holiday cottage accommodation....and the result is the captivating blend that is Harthill Hall. Nestling in 14 acres of grounds on an upland called Priest’s Hill with excellent walking available from the doorstep, the properties have the use of an extensive range of leisure facilities including an indoor heated swimming pool, sauna, solarium and treatment rooms. Noble names have woven the threads of the hall’s long history including Henry de Ferrers, the Cokaynes and the Harthills. Henry VIII is also believed to have stayed at the hall.

It was here in 1259 that Sir Richard de Hartle was issued a Papal Bull by Pope Alexander II, allowing him to appoint his own chaplain. The chapel ceased its functions as a place of worship in 1546 and now takes the form of The Chapel and Hartle Cottage. The eight cottages are furnished with antiques and surround a medieval cobbled courtyard. They all retain a wealth of original features including thick stone walls, large oak beams, mullion windows and flagstone floors. Derbyshire’s bustling market towns, villages, hills, dales and rivers offer majestic scenery, and a rich variety of customs. Boasting a varied and beautiful landscape, they offer a blend of heritage, history and family attractions. The beautiful market town of Bakewell (3½ miles) is situated on the River Wye, crossed by a 13th-century five-arched bridge which has coffee shops and restaurants. Within easy reach are Matlock, Hall Leys Park, Chesterfield, Alfreton and Buxton. National Trust properties and gardens nearby include Riley Graves, Longshaw, Mam Tor, South Peak, Dovedale, Hardwick Hall and Kedleston Hall. Close by are both Chatsworth House and Haddon Hall. Games room with free wireless internet connection (1gb per day per device). Golf and horse riding are available within 5 miles. Shop 3½ miles, pub 1 mile.

A self-contained first floor apartment reached via a steep exterior stone staircase situated above the swimming pool. Open-plan living/dining room and fitted kitchen with staircase to grounds. Double bedroom with 5ft four-poster bed, LCD TV and antique mahogany furniture. Twin bedroom. Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet.

Booked The Manners at Harthill Hall as seemed a good location / was dog friendly and the bonus of a pool / games room. The booking was frustrating as online only accepts 2 nights and we wanted 3 so had to wait 3 days for a response. The accommodation is extremely tired - the furniture is really uncomfortable esp after a long day walking and not really space for the 4 of us. The bathroom smelt awful of damp (we wondered why all the windows were open when we arrived.....) and the tepid bath water was disappointing. The toilet flush hardly worked and the master bedroom had condensation dripping down walls making anything at the bottom damp over night. All the windows had black around them - and rotten woodwork - which just made the whole place feel even more grubby. The lighting throughout was dim at best - especially in the dining area and kitchen / lounge - could not read the map etc. Electrics felt ad hoc - extension cables all over. The pool area is tired too - pool itself was small and cold - ok for 30 mins or so for the children. All the towels were thin and cheap feeling. The positives - lovely welcome fizz and Bakewell tarts - doggy treats too - the games room was fun if cold and the beds were as comfy as any we have slept in.The wifi worked well and was fast - So in short we went to bed early to be comfortable and used our laptop to watch a film. Lucky for us we only needed a base as had four days of walking and running planned - but if we had come for the accommodation / relax / comfort it would have been a disaster. It felt like a money spinner rather than a passion - we never met anyone / owner or manager the whole time.

The pool really made the holiday. We had a fabulous time and Lolly was so helpful. We loved the birthday cake, bottle and 🎈 balloons! Many thanks 😊

Good accommodation. Very comfy beds. Sofa quite firm. Bathroom adequate for our needs. Pool was good but a little bit cold for young children. The location is beautiful. As it is part of a few cottages there can be lots of people. We were a young family with a baby and the large house in front of the playground had a hen party staying but they did not disrupt our holiday.

Not very clean. We asked for 2 double beds instead we got 1 double and 2 single. Contact number not available thus we just had to get on with what we had. Quite difficult as had 2 toddlers and we did not ask for cot beds as we were co sleeping, difficult to do so safely in a single bed. Swimming pool not very clean either.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; The property is exactly as described, 1 double and 1 twin, there is no option to make up the twin as a double as it is impossible. We are sorry you were unable to make contact with the housekeeper, we have checked the log of calls/missed calls, emails and text and none were received. The property is thoroughly cleaned prior to our guest’s arrival.
