This property is part of our Welcome Cottages collection

A carefully curated collection of properties that offer high quality, good value accommodation in great locations across the UK, Ireland, France and Italy

Perfect for families, Knoll sleeps four guests and has many activities to enjoy, not just in the local area but also on-site.

"An ancient landscape of rolling downs, sheltered valleys
and Iron Age forts, immortalised in Hardy’s writings ..."

Enjoying a truly tranquil position in the village of Harcombe Bottom, close to the popular resort of Lyme Regis, Harcombe House offers a variety of accommodation to suit all tastes and requirements (refs DCCQ, DQK, DQL, DQM, DQN, DQP, DQQ, DTM and UKC2477). The house started life as a Victorian gentleman’s residence, and was later used as a boarding house for the local public school. Surrounded by 9-acre grounds, comprising gardens brimming with rhododendrons, well-tended lawns and shady woodland, each property is furnished to a good standard and enjoys shared use of an indoor swimming pool, hard tennis court and games room and well-equipped children’s playroom – making this an attractive choice for families. With sandy beaches, a host of seaside attractions, and beautiful countryside peppered with picture-postcard villages, all on the doorstep, Harcombe House truly is an ideal holiday location for exploring the delights of Dorset.
Just 2 miles away lies Lyme Regis, setting for the TV adaptation of John Fowles’ novelA French Lieutenant’s Woman’. Here, colourful fishing vessels and pleasure craft line the pretty harbour, and a host of outdoor activities, such as fishing, boating, sailing and windsurfing tuition, and golf can be enjoyed. Superb coastal walks can be taken along the World Heritage Coast, with its stretches of fossil beaches to explore, and magnificent views to admire from Golden Cap – the highest point on England’s south coast at 626-ft high.
Nearby, Hardy Country beckons visitors to discover the rolling green pastures and pretty thatched villages made famous in his novels, while for a great family day out, the Georgian seaside town of Weymouth is within easy reach, offering in addition to its harbour and sandy beaches, a host of all-weather attractions, as well as several RSPB sanctuaries. Also well worth a day trip is the county town of Dorchester, 20 miles, alias Hardy’s Casterbridge; offering a bustling market square, and some excellent shops and restaurants. Dorchester is also a great base from which to explore the impressive Maiden Castle rising up from the plains. Exeter is within easy driving distance, its skyline dominated by the distinctive monument of St Peter’s Cathedral. Other important historical buildings in the city include the 14th-century Guildhall, several ancient churches and the restored Quayside with its Custom House dating back to 1681. Another town well worth a visit is Weymouth, with many attractions for all the family, including the Sea Life Adventure Park, which gives the opportunity to get close to sharks and rays
Nearby Sidmouth boasts nearly 500 buildings listed as having special historic or architectural interest, and in August the town hosts what many consider to be the country’s best folk festival at the beginning of August. Folk and roots artists from around the world as well as dance and theatre companies take over various venues in the eight-day event. The fishing village of Beer lies huddled within a small sheltered cove between gleaming white headlands. Much of the village remains unchanged since the time when it was a smugglers’ eyrie. With numerous stately homes and gardens to visit locally, including Abbotsbury Swannery and Tropical Gardens, ancient forts perched upon hilltops affording far-reaching views and a host of seaside towns, including Seaton (with its tramway) stretching along the coastline, there is something for everyone to enjoy in this part of the country. Beach 2 miles. Shops ¾ mile, pub and restaurant 1 mile.

Brilliant facilities for the kids - pool, tennis court, games room and loads of outside space to run around. Really handy for Lyme Regis.

Had a great time staying in the cottage Knoll. Very clean and cosy. Easy to control the heating using the temperature dial. Lovely location surrounded by woodland. Very peaceful. My granddaughter left her teddy bear there and the owners posted it back to her free of charge. Great service. Large games room and swimming pool. Can't wait to go back.

Totally disappointing, we left early due due cobwebs in all rooms including kitchen, the fridge smelt, master bedroom mattress was uncomfortable to the point I still have a bad back a week later! The bedding was cheap, the duvet and cushions had seen better days, all in all we had a throughly miserable time at the cottage and stayed out all day. The games room was cold and uninviting, why should we be paying £1 for a game of pool?!? Surely this is part of the attraction for guests, I didn’t see anyone using this facility or the swimming pool, we didn’t use this either as confidence levels of cleanliness we nonexistent.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; The comments from Louise have been noted however, it would have been beneficial if the customer had brought these issues to me or my caretakers on site and we could have addressed them at the time. We maintain on site three brand new mattresses and we could have changed them at the time if there had been a request — likewise with the bedding. The games room heating is on all day so I am not sure why it was cold – unless somebody left the external doors open. With reference to the swimming pool, not sure how these assumptions can be made when the guests didn’t use the facilities.

What a fantastic place! The pool & games room & tennis court was so fantastic, to have it there, ready to use. The kids made friends with the other children there & so we rarely saw them in the evening as they all played with each other until dark. The location is great & we loved finding fossils at Charmouth. The kids are keen to return to Knoll! Highly recommended :)

Harcombe house is in a delightful , peaceful setting in beautiful countryside and within easy reach of the coast . We have stayed in two different apartments in the past which have been nicely appointed and have catered for all our needs, both clean and comfortable, with the bonus of a pool on site. Lyme Regis is full of interest historically, geologically, and hosts plenty of activities for all the family.
