Welcome Cottages

A carefully curated collection of properties that offer high quality, good value accommodation in great locations across the UK, Ireland, France and Italy

Situated close to the beach, this property provides idyllic accommodation for family or friends looking for a seaside adventure.

With the popular Avon Beach only a 5-minutes’ walk away, with its long stretch of beautiful golden sand, Harbour House is an ideal base for a seaside holiday. Standing detached, it is conveniently located for public transport to Bournemouth, and set back from the road. Tastefully styled and furnished, the open plan kitchen/dining area is a particular feature of this light and airy property, with its high vaulted ceiling and bi-folding doors, which open to the full width of the room. This is a lovely spacious room for the whole family to convene. There is private parking for 3 cars, and a large enclosed lawned garden to the rear, with a terrace and barbeque, the ideal place for al fresco dining or an aperitif or two in the warmer weather.

Overlooking the entrance to Christchurch Harbour is Mudeford, a quaint fishing village with great charm and history. Its old fisherman’s cottages were linked to smuggling enterprises in past times. There is a ferry that runs from the quay to neighbouring Christchurch and to Mudeford Sandbanks, a spit of land adjoining Hengistbury Head. Mudeford Quay is a calm area of water and is popular for sailing and windsurfing enthusiasts. The park area is popular for kite-flying and ball games. There is a children’s play area, an RNLI lifeboat station, a café, pub and fresh fish stall. The town has a historic theatre and cinema, as well as an interesting collection of local history exhibits at The Red House Museum. There are many period and historic houses and buildings, Highcliffe Castle and Steamer Point Nature Reserve are worth a visit. Stanpit Marsh is a Site of Special Scientific Interest and the wetlands are popular for birdwatching. There is a pleasant promenade linking the quay with the beach, which is ideal for swimming, windsurfing and boat trips across the Solent.

Other activities include fishing, kayaking, boat hire and browsing artworks at the local art galleries. Christchurch, 2 miles, has many inns, eateries, shops and a bustling harbour with waterside dining. Within easy reach are Bournemouth and Poole, 6 miles away, with award-winning beaches and seaside attractions. Popular places to spend the day include Swanage, Studland Bay, Brownsea Island, Avon Heath Country Park, Salisbury, Marwell Zoo and much more. The New Forest National Park is a 15-minute drive. Southampton with its nautical interest has ferry trips to the Isle of Wight. Beach 550 yards. Shop 550 yards, pub and restaurant ½ mile.

We spent a wonderful week this week at Harbour House. It was spotlessly clean, and we arrived to a lovely welcome pack that included a freshly baked Dorset Apple Cake, essentials like break and milk, and extras like a tub of marshmallows for the kids. We even had a lovely handwritten card from Julia. I was so impressed to see garden games for the children, BT tv instead of just freeview, and a study full of DVDs incase of rainy days. It really makes all the difference. From a practical perspective the house was well equipped with everything you need, towels, tea towels, dishwasher tablets, clingfilm etc. It was so nice not to have to make a trip out to stock up on essentials. The beach is literally 3 minutes walk away, and the sandpiper pub is almost as close (great standard pub food and child friendly). We will definitely be back!

Harbour House is a lovely, well equipped house in a perfect location. It is 5 minutes from the beach and a short walk takes you to the harbour where you can catch the ferry to Mudeford Sandbank, Christchurch etc. In the other direction, it takes about 30 minutes to walk along the tree lined cliff to Steamer Point nature reserve. The New Forest is only a short drive away with plenty to do including cycling, walking and eating out. We'd particularly recommend the Lantern Community cafe near Ringwood for delicious lunches at reasonable prices. They've also got a gift shop and a small farm shop. The only downside to our holiday (and the only reason we wouldn't use Harbour House again) was the difficulty we all had entering and exiting the driveway at the house particularly as the road outside is quite a busy one. Having said that, we did enjoy our holiday, the welcome pack was greatly appreciated (especially the apple cake) and we would recommend the house to others.

The house seems to be in need of some TLC. Block paving and gardens needed weeding, not a good impression when we first pulled into the very narrow driveway. The glass doors and windows were not clean. I had to clean the sink with a Brillo pad before I could use it. The house gave the impression that when it was decorated it had been done in a rush, drips on the floor still there. Chipped paint on the window sills of bathroom and toilet. The doors to these rooms hadn't been painted. We didn't like the separate bathroom, which was small for a large house, and toilet. I would have thought there would be an en suite in a house of that size. The area was great for sightseeing, lovely restaurants, The Jetty and The Boatyard were fabulous, well worth the money. We will not be returning to Harbour House, the week before we stayed at Carbis Bay in immaculate accommodation for the same price. Could be a lovely house if given the care it is crying out for.

Lovely modern property in a great location only a few minutes walk from the beach. The house is very spacious with a very nice large garden. It is furnished very nicely and is well equipped. The large open plan kitchen, dining and seating area is very impressive. We would definitely like to stay there again. The only small downside is that there is only one small bathroom. There are two small rooms downstairs which seemed of little use. If one of them were to be a bath or shower room the property would be even better.

Response on behalf of the owner; Thanks for your feedback. We will look into the feasibility of an extra bathroom.

We loved it so much we have booked again for later in the year. Thank you to Julie who made us so welcome from giving us helpful local advice and leaving the most thoughtful grocery supplies as well as a delicious home baked Dorset Apple Cake. Harbour House is a clean, homely and happy bright place to spend a holiday and many thanks to Julie and her team for keeping it beautiful and all the extra touches and care that make the holiday so special.
