National Trust Holiday Cottage

Greenway, the summer residence of the famous author Agatha Christie, is a magical place to explore, with its rich historical interior and the wildness and mystery of its garden. The long driveway to the house is stunning in itself, and when you see the house it is breathtaking. Agatha Christie set three of her novels here, all of which feature on the Agatha Christie Literary Trail: Five Little Pigs, Dead Man’s Folly and Ordeal by Innocence.
This first and second floor apartment, decorated and furnished to a very good standard with many original pieces of furniture from when Agatha Christie stayed here, including the typewriter she used to write many of her books, offers guests the experience of staying in the holiday home of the much loved crime writer. Occupying the first and second floors of Greenway House, at the heart of the magical garden, this house boasts glorious views of the River Dart. Greenway Apartment has its own small garden, however guests also have the privilege of access to Greenway garden at all times, as well as access to the house, café and shop during normal opening times. Agatha Christie described Greenway as ‘the loveliest place in the world’. It was here that she had her holiday home, on the banks of the River Dart. With a long history dating back to the 1490s, the house still retains features added by all generations of occupying families. Now managed by the National Trust, the property offers visitors an extraordinary glimpse into the private life of the Queen of Crime and her family.

In the novel ‘Dead Man’s Folly’ it appears as Nasse House, and the boat house was the scene of a murder. In the book ‘Ordeal by Innocence’, the house appears as Sunny Point House, and the Greenway Quay bell is used to summon the ferry to Drymouth (Dartmouth). Even the Baghdad Chest in the hallway of the house makes an appearance in ‘The Body in the Library’. Guests will benefit from free entry to Greenway during opening hours, and unlimited access to the gardens during their stay. Free entry is also available to Coleton Fishacre, Compton Castle and Bradley Manor upon showing the booking confirmation. Also guests will receive a discount voucher which can be redeemed at National Trust shops at Greenway, Coleton Fishacre and Dartmouth. The garden is large and extensive with some steep banks, eventually leading down to the River Dart. The accommodation is located above the visited areas of the house; some noise will be evident during normal house opening hours. There are many other places to visit close by including the Grand Hotel at Torquay, another favourite place of Agatha Christie, Paignton Zoo, steam railway, Dartmouth and many more National Trust properties all close by. Beach 21/2 miles. Shop 4 miles, pub and restaurant 11/2 miles.
