Description

Close to picturesque villages and wonderful beaches, this lodge is surrounded by countryside abundant in wildlife.

The perfect retreat, Great Hills Lodge sits on the edge of the pretty village of Week St Mary, close to the breathtaking beaches of Bude and Widemouth Bay in North Cornwall. It was created some years ago from the former stables of Great Hills House, an Edwardian gentleman’s residence inspired by the ‘Arts and Crafts’ movement, and built for the village doctor about 100 years ago.
This delightful, semi-detached holiday lodge sits peacefully beside the owner’s home along a private lane. It offers the perfect tranquil base from which to explore this stunning location and has amazing views over the rolling countryside from every room. The lovely living room has a door leading to the enclosed courtyard with a sitting-out area, while the kingsize bedroom enjoys a memory foam mattress for added comfort, and for your four-legged friend a doggy welcome pack is included. Country walks with a public footpath through woodland are just yards from the lodge and are ideal places for walking the dog or spotting wildlife. Deer are frequently seen in the fields which the lodge overlooks, and there is wildlife in abundance surrounding the lodge.
The village is encircled by beautiful rolling hills and magnificent scenery, with a well-stocked local store/post office and a lovely old church just a short walk away. It is the ideal holiday choice for family, friends and couples to relax and unwind at any time of year, and has great surfing and watersports close by. Bude is just 7 miles with its historic castle, vibrant town centre and vast array of good restaurants and bars; it also has three more glorious sandy beaches and a stunning coastal path. The picturesque fishing villages of Tintagel, Rock and Padstow are close by and the wild beauty of Dartmoor and Bodmin Moors are within easy driving distance, as is the famous Eden Project. Port Isaac, made famous in the TV series ’Doc Martin’, is worth a visit, as is Boscastle. For family fun, the Big Sheep and Milky Way adventure parks are not to be missed. Post Office, shop 500 yards, pub 4 miles.

What a fabulous peaceful location, and delightful hosts in Claire and John. Tranquility by the bucketful, and so many places to visit just a short drive away.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; Thank you for your kind words. We loved having you both and your grandson to stay. We are glad you managed to get a good photo of the woodpecker eventually. Come back and see us soon.

Great Lodges is a lovely cottage, great facilities, very accomodating, big enough for a family 2 adults and 2 children. We enjoyed our time there. I would say the only down fall is the washing machine is in the owners property, which can be difficult to use, if they are at work. Maybe a key to the washing room would be good for visitors to use.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner. Thank you for your great feedback and we are glad you enjoyed your time with us. We have taken on board your comments about the washing machine and realise that families like yourselves, with children, prefer to have that facility every day . We will in future therefore be providing guests with the key to access the boot room from the lodge, which as you know is the room between the two properties where the machine is.

The welcome pack was much appreciated after a long journey and the owner was very helpful. We all enjoyed our stay despite the weather being changeable

The cottage was clean, really cosy and had beautiful views. However, I found that from the very beginning we were told what we are and are not allowed to do. Taking into consideration that this was a dog friendly cottage/ holiday we thought that our cute Shih Tzu was restricted quite a lot. He was not allowed on the furniture and in the bedrooms. It was ok to keep him off the sofas, even though at home he is allowed, but trying to keep him out of the main bedroom it was really hard as he cried quite a lot during the night and woke up our little one several times (he is used to sleeping in his bed but in our bedroom). We weren't told that we cannot leave our dog unattended in the cottage. On our second day we wanted to go to see a gorgeous beach where dogs were not allowed and as it was a hot day and leaving him in the car wouldn't have been suitable, we left him at home only in the afternoon from 2pm. One hour later we received a call from the owner that we need to return as our dog is barking quite a lot. We were also told off and the cottage was inspected for any damage. This kind of ruined our last day. As there was nothing to do around the cottage we had to stay indoors for the rest of the afternoon and evening. We left the next day. We were told that it is mentioned in the manual that we cannot leave the dogs unattended but if it was that important why wasn't it mentioned at the beginning of our stay along with the rest of the restrictions?? We felt as if we were an inconvenience all the way through. I really liked the cottage, it was superb but the owners are not very dog friendly taking into consideration they have a dog of their own. I really think they should take into consideration the size of the dogs when they get families with dogs before setting these rules. This was our first trip away with our 10 months old baby and to be honest it wasn't too relaxing due to these few hiccups. So the point is that if you choose to stay there remember: -the dogs are not allowed on the sofas/ furniture -the dogs are not allowed in the bedrooms - you cannot leave the dogs unattended in the cottage - there is literally nothing to do around the cottage - local amenities are at a minimum The cottage itself was gorgeous and clean...I want to reiterate this.

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thank you for taking the time to review the lodge and we are pleased you found the property to your liking. When we spoke to you prior to your arrival for a three day stay you asked if we had a cot which we did not. You advised you would have the baby in bed with you. To ensure that your stay was as relaxing as it could be we went out especially to purchase a travel cot for the baby to use. As you note we do have a dog of our own and therefore know how enjoyable it is to bring them on holiday. We make no additional charge for pets and they have their own welcome pack. This includes the literature from Welcome Cottages which sets out clearly the conditions you agreed to adhere to at the time of booking. These are not conditions we ourselves created and are in place to facilitate the comfort and hygiene standards all our guests should expect. We phoned you when we heard your dog in distress for the three hours it was left alone and we offered to go in and take the dog into the garden to await your return. You chose not to take up this offer. We did check there was no damage to the property as we would need to be aware of this to prepare the lodge for the next guests who were arriving the day you left. We are sorry if you did not read the booking conditions prior to booking. We had no Issue with your little dog just the distress it was left in.
