Gilbert’s Cottage is a picturesque stone Mathry holiday cottage by the side of the green in this hilltop village. Carefully and affectionately restored, the style of the cottage is simple and uncluttered. The original fabric, dating back to the 1600’s - rough rendered white walls, oak beams and large inglenook fireplace - is complemented by warm, comfortable modern furnishings. The sitting room has deep slate sills and an oak boarded floor, with comfy sofas ranged around the ’simnai fawr’ - the huge ancient fireplace with a wood burning stove. The well-equipped kitchen combines calm grey colours, wooden worktops, a high beamed ceiling & slate floors and has steps leading up to the utility area and shower room beyond. The master bedroom on the ground floor, with its sloping boarded ceiling, has adjoining modern bath/shower room. Upstairs the twin bedroom in cool blues and white and the double in rich warm red and cream, with its floor level window, entice the visitor to look forward to bedtime.
Walk with your dog down through the Pen yr Allt and Broom Woods - it is lovely at any time of year but sports an amazing carpet of bluebells and wild garlic in the Spring. Accompanied by birdsong, the paths lead you above the marshy streambed to the un-crowded shingle and sand beaches of Abermawr and Aberbach. If you are there in the Autumn look out for seal pups on the shoreline.
The hundred year old and internationally renowned Tregwynt Mill, up the valley from Abermawr and Aberbach, takes a new approach to Welsh woollen goods. Revive your furnishings from a Welsh-made range of exclusive wool blankets, throws, cushions, accessories and clothing, combining traditional techniques and modern design.
