Fletchers Knapp sits gloriously within the picturesque hamlet of Elcombe, between Slad and the quintessential Cotswold village of Bisley. Idyllic and rural, this Cotswold stone annexe sleeps three guests and is perfect for couples or friends alike looking for a rural and peaceful escape. It’s rare to be able to stay within Elcombe, Fletchers Knapp annexe is one of only eleven limestone houses within the hamlet that look over the Slad Valley.
All set on the ground floor, the master suite offers a sumptuous double bed with the finest of linens, and a Jack and Jill bathroom with a deluxe shower. No Cotswold cottage would be complete without a roaring wood burner for those chillier months of the year. Curl up on the sofa with a good book and glass of something to the backdrop of a roaring fire - perfection! The spacious kitchen and dining area has garden views. Outside you have a small private courtyard to enjoy, again with seating for dining al fresco.
Just beyond your doorstep is a walkers’ and poetry lovers’ paradise; you can walk in the footsteps of Laurie Lee and immerse yourself in all that inspired the famous writer. Take a stroll to the ancient woodlands of the Laurie Lee Wood nature reserve, which is stunning all year round. In spring it bursts into life with bluebells. Carry on to the summit of Swifts’ Hill where you will see breathtaking views of Gloucestershire, the River Severn and even Wales. The surrounding woods, especially the ancient beech of Frith Wood, are clothed in bluebells in Spring. With a scenic 20-minute ramble past Fletchers Orchard, blackberry hedges and hay fields, you will reach the Woolpack in Slad, of ’Cider with Rosie’ fame. It also serves top-notch nosh if you have built up an appetite by dinner time, and it’s worth calling ahead to book a table as it’s a firm favourite with the locals. Should you have one too many craft beers, it’s just a five-minute taxi ride back.
You are perfectly positioned at the heart to explore the following; regency Cheltenham, Painswick and the Rococo Gardens, Woodchester Mansion, Cirencester, Nailsworth, Gloucester Cathedral and Stroud. Stroud is well worth a visit especially on a Saturday, as the bohemian market comes alive with an array of organic produce and food artisans. From Stroud, take a peaceful canal walk along the Chalford Valley, past the old woollen mills and Stroud Brewery and Felt Café.
However you choose to spend your time at Fletcher Knapp, it’s sure not to disappoint, with charm and character in abundance it’s the ultimate choice to immerse yourself in the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty of the Cotswolds.
