Nice cottage, well equipped. We were staying as a family of six and the two separate kitchens really helped. Very comfortable lounge. There is a chest of toys for little ones which our daughter loved exploring. Beds were nice and firm and comfortable. Location-wise there is a fair amount to do in the local area.

Good place overall but disappointed with stair gates for child safety. Described as having stair gates which it didn’t. It had one very strange piece of kit to put across the bottom of the stairs. Also no sheet for the travel cot which was annoying as we could have brought our own had we known. Also kitchen could be better equipped, knives were blunt for preparing food.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the owner; The property is advertised as having a stair gate and one is provided with instructions for use. It is new and complies with safety standards. Bedding is provided for the beds as advertised. We have been informed that it is the booking agency’s policy to not supply cot bedding because of allergy risks to babies. We believe that guests are informed of this when booking through the agency. A clean single bed sheet was made available for use when requested, as was an additional stair gate. As for the blunt knives, no mention of this was made during the stay. We would have happily sorted this during the stay as the above issues were and will ensure they are sharp ready for our next guests.

Fenns barn is generally a nice holiday cottage, just with a few issues. When we booked it it had 9.9 rating on Reevoo but I don't think it really deserves such a high score as it is far from perfect. We wanted to use the outdoor garden space but the lawns needed cutting really, and in general the outside areas of the property needed weeding. We had 2 children with us, and 4ft high stinging nettles were growing next to one of paths, so not great for playing outside! The kitchens (it has 2) were generally well equipped but we found the oven was not very good and was taking a very long time to cook food properly. I even looked up the instructions on line to check that we were operating it correctly, and we were. It was taking about 50% longer to cook food than it should have. The main living space is quite dark and gloomy, we had to have the lights on all the time or have the front door wide open to let some light in, but as it's a converted with limited windows I suppose this should be expected in some ways. A glass panel in the front door would make an enormous difference though! Worth noting is mobile phone coverage, it is very poor and we could not get any signal on Vodafone or O2 during our stay, even outside. Basic EE coverage was available outside but the signal was weak. The WiFi at the property is very good though, with coverage throughout and 30mb+ download speed was regularly available. The property lacks local information about things to do. We didn't find any leaflets relating to local attractions, and generally we were left feeling a little bit disappointed with the area in general as the village only has a pub and nothing else. On the positive side, the property was immaculately clean. The showers are good with plenty of hot water on demand. The heating was very good (a bit too good if I'm honest!) and kept the barn nice and warm. I would not hesitate to stay here in the winter, I'm sure you would be very cosy! The views and countryside surrounding the property are amazing.

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Thanks for your positive comments regarding our amazing views and countryside that surrounds our property, cleanliness, showers and heating. However, we were a little taken back by the harshness and tone of some of your comments. The barn has an extremely high rating because the vast majority of guests love staying at the property and want to share their positive experiences with others. We will hope to address some of the points raised. The lawns were mowed three days before the guests arrived so find this comment really confusing. One of the lawns is next to a field that has some nettles and some grow in the shrubbery near the parking area but not on the lawned areas. This is the first time we have heard about a problem with either of the ovens, so will get temperatures checked. The glass door suggestion to let in more light is an interesting idea but the Peak District National Park has strict planning rules regarding what’s allowed. The property is a barn conversion. As with most hilly rural locations, mobile phone reception is intermittent. The property has lots of information and leaflets regarding local attractions; we do not understand how these could not be found as they are in the folder left for guests on arrival. The bookshelf has several local guide books to hand also. The village has a pub within walking distance. The village and amenities are accurately described in the information when booking. The village of Butterton is a conservation area and the nearby Manifold Valley is an area of outstanding natural beauty. Our cottage is perfect for those looking for a quiet and peaceful get away.

Lovely cottage in a beautiful setting. Used as a base to explore the peak district. Ample space for 6 people. Unsure of the need for two kitchens but the cottage could be used as two separate cottages for 4 and a 2. The downstairs shower room is large but shower itself was poor. Loved the underfloor heating but struggled to heat the living room to a comfortable temperature. Kitchen was well stocked with utilities and the washer/dryer came in very handy after set and muddy walks. We were unable to get the tv working as no channels were on the tv but we happily settled for dvds and uno. Overall a wonderful stay and highly recommended. Thank you

Response on behalf of the owner:- Thank you for recommending our cottage and we are pleased to hear you had a wonderful stay. We were unaware about the problem with the TV channels, but this has now been sorted. You are correct when you say the cottage can be split hence the two kitchens and we find that many guests like this arrangement, especially guests with children who cook separate meals. The downstairs shower is a good quality electric shower, that functions as it should, although not a power shower. As for the underfloor heating, the temperature can be turned up during cold weather by guests using the room thermostats in each area; alternatively guests can let us know if the temperature is an issue as we can easily sort this; we live next door. Once again thank you for your positive remarks and comments and we hope we can welcome you back to Butterton in the future.
