This property is part of our Scottish Country Cottages collection

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Enjoy a romantic break at this stunning detached cottage, which lies on a 400-acre estate with beautiful grounds to explore.

Nestling in the grounds of Fasque Estate, these five stunning detached cottages sit in the glorious countryside of southern Aberdeenshire, on the border of the Scottish Highlands. Ideal for a short or long break at any time of the year, they have been meticulously designed with traditional comfort and an individual elegance in mind. They range from a fairytale romantic hideaway, to sumptuous family homes. Guests are free to roam the extensive grounds of the estate, which is home to a wealth of wildlife - look out for the private deer herd on the banks of the lochan, or you may see squirrels, woodpeckers and buzzards whilst following the many paths and walkways that criss-cross the grounds. Activities are available on site, including shooting, clay pigeon shooting and horse riding, and catering and housekeeping are available by arrangement. The estate would have been one of the main employers in the area. Employees were housed in the properties on the estate, as indeed they still are today. Sir John Gladstone bought the Fasque mansion in 1829 and his son, William Gladstone, Queen Victoria’s prime minister, was a frequent visitor throughout his life.

The Garden Rooms (ref UKC2426) makes for a truly romantic retreat, with its turret and cosy open fires in the living room and bedroom. Set in the walled garden of the estate, this is a wonderful property offering privacy and has been imaginatively furnished to emphasise comfort and luxury. The Gardeners Cottage (ref UKC2427) has large sliding patio doors in the kitchen which open out to a sun filled patio. Enjoy a glass of wine or al fresco dining in total privacy. This property lets the outside in and offers an exceptional level of comfort. Surrounded by its own private garden, Avenue Cottage (ref UKC2428) is a delightful two bedroom cottage that has been elegantly furnished throughout. With up-to-date facilities and zip and link beds, it offers ideal accommodation for families or friends. Gardeners Bothy (ref UKC2429) is a gorgeous house offering a luxurious interior in convivial surroundings. It has a large open plan living area, and the kitchen opens out to the secluded patio and garden on two sides. There are two bedrooms on the ground floor and one on the first, which has large Velux windows maximising the light and views. The Stables (ref UKC3863) was built in a square shape with a fully enclosed inner courtyard landscaped with water features and stylish planting, the house is a wonderful choice for extended families with children of all ages. Guests will love the different sitting areas, styled with flair and comfort in mind and the beautiful bedrooms offer a boutique experience with partial walls concealing extravagant en-suite bathrooms, luxurious beds and plenty of space.

Country houses and castles abound in the surrounding areas, such as Crathes Castle near Banchory, with its turrets and gargoyles. There are gardens and woodland walks, as well as craft activities for the children. The ruins of Dunnottar Castle may look familiar to film fans, as the castle was one of the inspirations for Disney Pixar’s animated ’Brave’. Dating back to 1824, Fettercairn Distillery near Laurencekirk is one of Scotland’s oldest malt whisky distilleries, and offers summer tours Monday to Saturday. Royal Lochnagar Distillery lies next to Balmoral Castle in Royal Deeside, and retains much of its original charm. Match your desire for whisky knowledge to one of Lochnagar’s three tours throughout the year. Brechin Castle Centre provides a variety of activities for families, including nature trails, miniature railway and model farm. For those keen on wildlife, there is a visitor centre at Montrose Basin Nature Reserve, where you can enjoy a telescopic view of the local wildlife, from migratory birds to seals. Visitors to Fasque Castle are spoilt for choice when it comes to activities. For golfers, the championship links at St Andrews and Carnoustie are tantalisingly close, and several local golf courses are available at Brechin, Letha

Wonderful place to stay if you’re looking to get away from it all. Cottage and surrounding grounds are stunning and location is peaceful and quiet. Only very small negatives worth mentioning, do not do a big food shop before you arrive as the accommodation has the tiniest fridge freezer I have ever seen! It was fine for us as it was cold enough to leave some supplies outside to stay chilled. One other small thing is the local pub has just closed down but the local shop is well stocked and very friendly. Over all we had an amazing stay and would highly recommend the Garden Rooms.

We chose this property for our Ruby Wedding Anniversary. The property was stunning. The attention to detail was superb. So many lovely little touches to make it very romantic. It was lovely to have some essential food items on arrival. Much appreciated. The underfloor heating was great but unfortunately it wasn't in the toilet so the room was very cold. We did have a very cold week so this is probably not always an issue. The grounds were beautiful to wander around, expecially at dusk. The deer were wonderful along with all other wildlife we saw. The main house was lit up at night and was beautiful. The Sonos music system was great. We enjoyed the open fire in the evenings. We were able to explore many National Trust for Scotland castles in the area and also visit Aberdeen and Dundee. The Discovery Point exhibition in Dundee is well worth a visit. Shame we couldn't get the tv to work!

Style before substance. Beautifully designed with unique pieces but the basics are lacking. There is a drainage problem as the bathroom upstairs smelt pretty bad. Lack of kitchen utensils e.g the only sharp knife was a bread knife and the saucepans were pretty ropey. Don’t aim to go there and cook as there is a very small fridge and convection oven/microwave making it virtually impossible . It says on the website that the Arch Bistro deliver meals, they don’t. There is no tv signal and there are no instruction leaflets on anything. The fire in the sitting room smokes so badly that if you light it, you will have a cold evening with the windows open waiting for it to go out. When we arrived there were no logs in or firefighters to be found. The heating downstairs is locked and can’t be adjusted to suit. The contact number given for any issues just goes to a full mailbox with no emergency contact details. We couldn’t get hold of anyone to answer our queries. Disappointing find as it looks amazing on the website! We wouldn’t recommend it and will not be returning.

Response on behalf of the Owner; Firstly, thank you for your valuable response. I am deeply saddened to read your comments and have addressed them all. I have no defence other than we are trying really hard to bring the property back to how it was before our handing it over to a shambolic management company, no longer involved. The chimney had now been swept and no more issues there, the pans and knifes replaced and the TV aerial was dealt with during your stay. We have gone to great lengths with the Garden rooms and have multiple awards including Aberdeenshire council’s highest accolade. I was again saddened that you thought it was not value for money with two storeys of individually designed space, multiple entertainment devices, real fires, robes, slippers, quality toiletries, hand painted ceilings, Jacuzzi bath etc., at 3 star hotel room prices, however if that’s how you feel, apologies. The office number is not always manned to accommodate calls, however, you were given a mobile number and an email address to get in touch, however, again, I’ve taken note and looking into an answering agency so there always s human answering calls. Lastly the smell, I’ve won the battle with Klargester and had the issue resolved. Again, it’s an A listed property built in 1820 so a mini system had to be installed to handle the waste. We addressed this issue through a process of elimination but again you clearly still had the unpleasant experience which is not good. Finally, thank you. Without valuable customer feedback we are nothing. I do hope you give us another chance.
