Description

Enjoy a romantic break at this stunning detached cottage, which lies on a 400-acre estate with beautiful grounds to explore.

Nestling in the grounds of Fasque Estate, these five stunning detached cottages sit in the glorious countryside of southern Aberdeenshire, on the border of the Scottish Highlands. Ideal for a short or long break at any time of the year, they have been meticulously designed with traditional comfort and an individual elegance in mind. They range from a fairytale romantic hideaway, to sumptuous family homes. Guests are free to roam the extensive grounds of the estate, which is home to a wealth of wildlife - look out for the private deer herd on the banks of the lochan, or you may see squirrels, woodpeckers and buzzards whilst following the many paths and walkways that criss-cross the grounds. Activities are available on site, including shooting, clay pigeon shooting and horse riding, and catering and housekeeping are available by arrangement. The estate would have been one of the main employers in the area. Employees were housed in the properties on the estate, as indeed they still are today. Sir John Gladstone bought the Fasque mansion in 1829 and his son, William Gladstone, Queen Victoria’s prime minister, was a frequent visitor throughout his life.

The Garden Rooms (ref UKC2426) makes for a truly romantic retreat, with its turret and cosy open fires in the living room and bedroom. Set in the walled garden of the estate, this is a wonderful property offering privacy and has been imaginatively furnished to emphasise comfort and luxury. The Gardeners Cottage (ref UKC2427) has large sliding patio doors in the kitchen which open out to a sun filled patio. Enjoy a glass of wine or al fresco dining in total privacy. This property lets the outside in and offers an exceptional level of comfort. Surrounded by its own private garden, Avenue Cottage (ref UKC2428) is a delightful two bedroom cottage that has been elegantly furnished throughout. With up-to-date facilities and zip and link beds, it offers ideal accommodation for families or friends. Gardeners Bothy (ref UKC2429) is a gorgeous house offering a luxurious interior in convivial surroundings. It has a large open plan living area, and the kitchen opens out to the secluded patio and garden on two sides. There are two bedrooms on the ground floor and one on the first, which has large Velux windows maximising the light and views. The Stables (ref UKC3863) was built in a square shape with a fully enclosed inner courtyard landscaped with water features and stylish planting, the house is a wonderful choice for extended families with children of all ages. Guests will love the different sitting areas, styled with flair and comfort in mind and the beautiful bedrooms offer a boutique experience with partial walls concealing extravagant en-suite bathrooms, luxurious beds and plenty of space.

Country houses and castles abound in the surrounding areas, such as Crathes Castle near Banchory, with its turrets and gargoyles. There are gardens and woodland walks, as well as craft activities for the children. The ruins of Dunnottar Castle may look familiar to film fans, as the castle was one of the inspirations for Disney Pixar’s animated ’Brave’. Dating back to 1824, Fettercairn Distillery near Laurencekirk is one of Scotland’s oldest malt whisky distilleries, and offers summer tours Monday to Saturday. Royal Lochnagar Distillery lies next to Balmoral Castle in Royal Deeside, and retains much of its original charm. Match your desire for whisky knowledge to one of Lochnagar’s three tours throughout the year. Brechin Castle Centre provides a variety of activities for families, including nature trails, miniature railway and model farm. For those keen on wildlife, there is a visitor centre at Montrose Basin Nature Reserve, where you can enjoy a telescopic view of the local wildlife, from migratory birds to seals. Visitors to Fasque Castle are spoilt for choice when it comes to activities. For golfers, the championship links at St Andrews and Carnoustie are tantalisingly close, and several local golf courses are available at Brechin, Letha

Delightful cottage - great fun in its decor and furnishings. Great location. Wonderful bath, comfortable bed, cosy and comfortable lounge. Very small kitchen - ok for breakfast and a bit of heating up. Good food at the Ramsay Hotel in the village. Handy little shop too.

Beautiful cottage- in a gorgeous walled garden setting. We knew the kitchen was small so wasn’t a problem for us The internet didn’t work at all while we were there, but they were trying to fix it Large smart tv and Sonos which would be great with Wi-fi So lovely to walk round the park and see the deer and rabbits everywhere

A wonderful and memorable holiday, staying in a very special little cottage! This place has been very thoughtfully converted into a very comfortable, luxurious house in a superb location. The former family home of the Gladstone family. It is small, therefore rooms like the kitchen are small, but if you accept these quirks then you will have a great time. A lot of thought has gone into these cottages such as the welcome hamper with cereals, Scottish bread and preserves. You feel like you've got the whole country estate to yourself, and your nearest neighbours in the huge grounds are the pheasants, rabbits and families of Deer. If you want a vibrant nightlife, lots of people to talk to and loads of shops on your door step then you've gone to the wrong place (although a visit to Fettercairn Distillery is well recommended and along with the superb village bistro, is within a 10-15 minute walk). Lots of places are accessible by road, but this location is a very well run romantic Scottish Highland get away. Thanks to all the staff at Fasque House estate for a very memorable holiday!

A lovely comfortable property in a stunning location in the grounds of an estate (actually within an old walled garden). Its only for 2 and is well appointed & spacious except the kitchen is very small as noted by other people but we found this fine if you are only there a few nights (2 of you cannot be in it at the same time!)

The Garden Room looks impressive from the outside, and is located on a beautiful estate. The kitchen was very disappointing; ridiculously small, the fridge was only a milk carton deep and there were no containers to use in the microwave. There was no table to eat at, we had to eat over side tables. The only seating in the lounge room was a very worn couch that had holes in the upholstery and required cleaning. An unpleasant odour also developed from behind a cover in the kitchen. The grille on the exhaust fan (above the shower/bath) was visibly blocked with fluff/dust and did not extract steam effectively. The two seater in the bedroom required cleaning, and the mattress was uncomfortable, but I appreciate that is a subjective comment.

Fantastic location. Very quiet and surrounded by wonderful grounds. Car parking by property. Kitchen tiny but we knew this before coming. House clean and well equipped although more drinking glasses would help and dustpan and brush. Great tv package and easy to use Sonus in lounge and bedroom A small table for eating in lounge would work well Would come again

Wonderful place to stay if you’re looking to get away from it all. Cottage and surrounding grounds are stunning and location is peaceful and quiet. Only very small negatives worth mentioning, do not do a big food shop before you arrive as the accommodation has the tiniest fridge freezer I have ever seen! It was fine for us as it was cold enough to leave some supplies outside to stay chilled. One other small thing is the local pub has just closed down but the local shop is well stocked and very friendly. Over all we had an amazing stay and would highly recommend the Garden Rooms.
