Just over a mile away lies the coastal town of Criccieth, where there is a sandy beach at low tide and a 13th-century castle perched on a rocky headland. Across the bay, the dramatically located Harlech Castle stands as another testament to more turbulent times. For shopping, good dining and a weekly street market, visit the bustling port town of Pwllheli, 6 miles. The holiday centre of Porthmadog has a wide range of facilities for rock climbing, riding, canoeing and fishing. From here it is an easy drive to visit the beautiful Italianate village of Portmeirion with its forest walks, gardens and sandy beach. For a novel mode of transport along the coastline, hop aboard the Blaenau Ffestiniog Narrow-Gauge Railway, which still operates on a line first opened in 1836.
