This property is part of our English Country Cottages collection

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

This holiday property, a former part of Mendip Hospital, is full of charm and character, with art work and wonderful furnishings throughout.

Dating from 1880, Easel Cottage sits on the highest point of South Horrington village, just outside the medieval city of Wells, affording it a superb viewpoint towards King’s Castle Wood.
In its former function, the cottage was part of the Mendip Hospital, and used as a porter’s lodge and staff quarters. Lovingly brought back to life without losing its original charm, it retains original doors and windows, with the addition of modern comforts.
Whilst renovating Easel Cottage, the owners have collected some weird and wonderful finds, including unopened 1960s medication, shoes, Victorian glass and hospital meal menus. The cottage was originally attached by a bridge to the main house (Mendip House), which is currently inhabited by the cottage owners. Mendip House is also the home of the owner’s gallery business. The walls of Easel Cottage benefit from housing a selection from the art collection, providing a visually rich, unique style to every room. It is an art lover’s paradise – your own private gallery for the duration, with the works adorning the walls available for purchase. The gallery business’ network of local artists means that the owner can also organise art workshops/activities/instruction if visitors are inclined.
A short stroll from Easel Cottage will find you in the heart of South Horrington, which between 1848–1991 was the Mendip Hospital. The original hospital was built to house 400 patients and staff. The principal architect was George Gilbert Scott, who is better known for his designs of St Pancras Station and the Albert Memorial in London. Wells Cricket Club is based in South Horrington, with Wells Golf Club’s beautiful 18-hole parkland course at the foot of the village.
Shrubs, trees and flowers adorn the cottage garden, attracting a myriad of birds which fill the air with birdsong. Situated alongside Easel Cottage, visitors will also have use of the owner’s private Bluebell Wood, and you may be lucky enough to spot the deer that wander through occasionally.
There are some glorious walks emanating directly from the cottage. Wells Cathedral, Bishop’s Palace and Vicar’s Close are 1½ miles away and can be accessed via a picturesque walk running alongside Wells Golf Course. Other routes take the walker past King’s Wood through to Dulcote and Dinder. There is also a good selection of independent restaurants located in Wells.
Conveniently placed for visits to Glastonbury Abbey and Tor, the beauty of the Mendip Hills and Somerset Levels, Cheddar Gorge and Wookey Hole Caves. Within an easy drive, guests can reach the cities of Bath and Bristol, as well as the coastal resorts and sandy beaches at Weston-Super-Mare, Burnham-on-Sea and Brean Sands. Shop and pub within 1 mile.

We had a wonderful week at Easel Cottage. It was a very comfortable property within easy reach of lots of attractions and we absolutely loved coming 'home' afterwards there a day out. The owners were superbly helpful and ensured everything we needed was there.

What a beautiful place! Our whole family loved staying at Easel Cottage. The location is great for families as there are lots of things to do. We visited Longleat, Wookey Hole, Wells, Bath and Stourhead house and gardens. After some busy days we were all very glad to return to the cottage as it was so comfortable and homely. The owners have done a fantastic job of restoring the cottage and filled it with art work that we enjoyed. It is a lovely mix of old and new and had everything that we needed. The dvds, toys and games room was a great extra and the essentials left in the fridge for us on our arrival were a lovely touch. The private woods were greatly appreciated by our girls who spent a lot of time exploring them. The cottage is elevated and very peaceful. We all loved waking up to the birdsong each morning. Unfortunately the weather wasn't as kind to us as we had hoped and we didn't get to sit and enjoy the view with a glass or two on the balcony but maybe next time. Thank you for a perfect stay.
