English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Set in ¾ of an acre of natural unspoilt and landscaped gardens, Dragon Cottage includes fantastic on-site leisure facilities.

Set in ¾ of an acre of natural unspoilt and landscaped gardens, with a small stretch of exclusive catch and release fly fishing, this 300-year-old detached stone holiday cottage has been in the same family for over 100 years and has been lovingly and sympathetically restored by the friendly young owners. It has superb outdoor leisure facilities including a hot tub (available all year), sauna and beautiful circular Nordic barbecue experience, and a unique steam shower room on the ground floor. Situated just 1 mile from the beautiful grounds of Nunnington Hall and nestling in the peaceful hamlet of West Ness surrounded by stunning countryside, it is an idyllic location to discover the beauty of the North Yorkshire Moors National Parks and the rugged grandeur of the Yorkshire coast. Historic houses, castles and abbeys such as Castle Howard and Rievaulx Abbey are but a few miles from the door. The Minster City of York with many museums, galleries, theatres and ancient cobbled streets packed with antique shops, tea rooms, inns and restaurants is a must. A 40 minute drive leads to the East Yorkshire coast, home to the seaside towns of Scarborough, Filey and Robin Hoods Bay. Historic Whitby, known for its connections with Captain Cook, is just a further 30 minutes. The market towns of Malton, Kirkbymoorside, Helmsley, Easingwold and Pickering are all at hand and still host the weekly markets, with Pickering being home to the North Yorkshire Moors Steam Railway and a memorable journey through the beautiful Esk Valley into Heartbeat’s very own village of Goathland. So much to do and see makes visitors want to return again and again to the peace and tranquillity on offer at Dragon Cottage. Shops 3 miles.

Beautiful cottage but needs some of the ivy cutting back especially around the cottage windows and the summer house.

Overall a nice stay. More than a few faulty items and garden furniture in need of replacing. Owner on the ball & willing to help out. Our pet loved the huge garden and the neighbourly sheep .

Lovely cottage that was ideal for my Dad's 60th party. Loved the hot tub! Cottage was well equipped and furnished and was toasty warm in the unexpected March snow. Cottage is in a very quiet location and was a great place to spend a relaxing week.

Fantastic holiday. Wonderful cottage - a few minor maintenance issues need addressing but you expect that with cottages of this type. Enjoyed the Hot tub and barbecue. Local walks around Caulkeys bank and Nunnington. Fished for Grayling in the private stretch of the River Rye opposite. Days out to Whitby, Scarborough, Dalby forest and York by train. Local pubs the Malt Shovel (very family friendly) and The Grapes Inn (not so family friendly but loads of character)

Beautiful cottage with great decor and facilities. During our stay, we were a little unlucky with many things breaking and the hot tub not being cleaned. This was the sole reason for booking this cottage, and we were unable to use it for three days.

Very disappointed with our 4 day stay at Dragon Cottage. Property potentially lovely but very tired and unloved. No instructions on how to use oven or heating. We had an issue with both the oven and also one day the heating did not come on and would have been useful having instructions on how to resolve. Also no instructuons on the sauna. Music not working in there and also tv in upstairs bathroom not working. Should not advertise these luxury items if they are not working .We did eventually manage to contact the owner but again the signal was not very good and we were without heat for sometime. Lots of bulbs not working in the property and the spares were all bayonet fitting rather than the screw required. No main light working in dining room. Both lamps in downstairs bedroom not working. No bulb for light in bbq hut, had to take from another lamp in bedroom. Previous renter had burnt wood in hut and it smelt very badly. The electric fire in the lounge smelt badly and again the light showing a glow not working. Overall not the luxury accomodation we thought we had booked and definitely not worth the money spent!

    Response from:

Response on behalf of the Owner; Many thanks for the feedback; we are always looking at ways of improving the property so that people have a nice break away in the countryside. I have to say I am a little surprised by some of the comments made and would have to disagree, especially the “tired” and “unloved” comments; which I have to say every other reviewer here disagrees with completely. To make sure our guests have the best possible stay with us, we provide a manual with instructions for everything you need in the cottage. From the sounds of your review I take it you didn’t find it, which is a shame as we leave it in an easily found place and it sounds like the vast majority of the issues would have been sorted straight away. When you say you “eventually” got hold of me, to be clear it was within an hour, and the issue with the heating was sorted by you increasing the thermostat temperature in the hallway. The television issue was sorted by pressing a button on the remote. I don’t really think it’s fair to say those items were not working, more it wasn’t known how they worked. With regards to phone signal, the majority of phone providers have good coverage in the area, but as you can appreciate signal is determined by network, make and model and a variety of other factors that are in no way in our control. There is Wi-Fi in the cottage, so depending on your handset if the signal is not strong enough you can use the Wi-Fi calling facility. When I saw your comments about the bulbs being out, I did speak to our housekeeper that looks after cottage and they were aware of two lights being out at the time. They did check and there were plenty of suitable replacements for the lights, as it is something we are insistent on having. I am going to be completely honest with you, I did have a little chuckle when I read your comments about how the BBQ hut, which we provide you wood to burn on it, smelling of burnt wood... Whilst I understand you didn’t feel you got your monies worth on your stay, I don’t want any guest leaving on a sour note, I want everyone to enjoy the cottage as much as we do and anything we can do to make the property better we certainly will.
