English Country Cottages

An inspiring collection of properties chosen for their character, luxury and heritage, all graded 4 star and above.

Discover Essex and its beaches, Constable Country and pretty Suffolk villages, all within easy reach.

Dovercourt is a very old town listed within the Domesday Book of 1086, though the nearby historic port of Harwich is better known. Dovercourt Hall is a timber framed building with a wealth of exposed beams and an inglenook fireplace. The property was built around 1600, and is a Grade II listed building with further additions later in the 17th century. Originally built as a farmhouse, the surrounding land was farmed until the 1950s, and is now set in an acre of grounds with a natural pond. During the long history of the property, further renovations were carried out during 2015 which lead to the completion of Dovercourt Hall Cottage.

This delightful property, one of a pair, is adjacent to the owner’s home and comprises four bedrooms, a spacious living room with open fire and an open plan kitchen/dining area. Decorated and furnished to a very good standard, guests can enjoy up-to-date amenities but still admire the character and charm of this historic cottage. The large garden is the ideal place to sit out and enjoy a lovely summer’s evening with friends and family, hosting a barbecue and enjoying relaxing in the seating area.

Enjoy either an award-winning beach by the leading lighthouses or walk in the opposite direction onto the natural foreshore, both are just over the road across the playing field from the cottage. Also within a 5-minute walk from the cottage is a large range of activities, swimming pool, gym, squash and badminton courts, plus seasonal activities include roller skating, a putting green, a boating lake and skateboard park. Walk to historic Harwich, visit the Mayflower Project where a full-size replica of the famous ship that took the pilgrim fathers to America is being built or the Redoubt Napoleonic Fort and other museums. See a movie in the Electric Palace, one of the oldest cinemas in the country, built in 1911. From the Ha’penny pier visitors can take the foot ferry to Felixstowe. Clacton or Walton with their piers and traditional seaside amusements are within 15 miles journey. Also well worth a visit is Colchester, 20 miles away, the oldest recorded town in Britain with plenty of history, a large castle and shopping, as well as a zoo. Constable Country, Ipswich and pretty Suffolk villages all are within 35 minutes’ drive. The nearest golf club is less than 1½ miles away, or Frinton-on-Sea, which has two golf courses, is 14 miles way. Beach 200 yards. Shop ½ mile, pub and restaurant ¼ mile.

Spacious living room with open fire, French doors and wooden floor. Spacious kitchen/dining room with electric range (for cooking). Utility. Shower room with toilet. First floor: Double bedroom with 5ft bed and TV. Two twin bedrooms. Bathroom with over-bath shower and toilet. Second floor: Double bedroom with 6ft bed, TV and en-suite bathroom with toilet.

This cottage was perfect. We had a lovely time here. It had everything we needed, was in a great location and was wonderfully relaxing. We didn't need to take the car as we could walk to explore the local area. There was plenty of space for us. The grounds are very well kept, there is a great seating area and with glorious weather, we were in our element. The house is beautifully maintained, the bathrooms are great, especially the downstairs shower room! All in all, a fantastic housexperience which we would love to return to without a doubt.

A good house for a group or family with children. Well equipped although food storage space in kitchen was limited. Showers were great. If you are tall be prepared to bend down in places. Outside space and Bbq were excellent.

An idyllic place to stay, just a 2 minute walk from the sea. The house is very characterful, with loads of space and a lovely fire. All the rooms are beautifully decorated. We will definitely be back.

A lovely spacious cottage very near the coast. It was very clean and homely. The upstairs floorboards were very noisy so proved hard for a good night’s sleep however that should be expected of a cottage, so just something to be aware of. Unfortunately we had problems using the oven - it didn’t heat up properly so spoilt a special meal we had planned as it didn’t cook in the time expected. That also spoilt our breakfast the following morning as we couldn’t seem to get the grill working properly either. Could do with instructions being left. Also struggled with the TV and DVD player but there were no instructions for them either. A lovely cottage though and we were able to go on lots of walks in the area.
