Description

Enjoy a stay at this unique gothic miniature castle exuding character and history, set amidst parkland designed by Capability Brown.

Deer Park stands within 20 acres of parkland that is part of Capability Brown’s design for the great park at Scampston Hall. It is a Grade II* listed crenelated, gothic miniature castle with a long and fascinating history – folly and tea house, game keeper’s cottage, army camp and family home. It is now a spacious and very comfortable holiday house, ideal for family get-togethers, where children will find plenty to keep them entertained and adults can relax and enjoy this unique property with its numerous period features. The huge farmhouse kitchen is always cosy with heat from the Aga and there are open fires in the breakfast room and upstairs drawing room and a wood burner in the living room, adding to the ambience of these elegant rooms.

The house is surrounded by an enclosed garden with uninterrupted views over the park to Scampston Hall, a fine stately home with an award-winning walled garden and lovely restaurant. The park is a natural nature reserve and home to a wealth of wildlife, including deer, stoats and numerous species of birds. Rillington village is close by and has a useful selection of amenities including a general store, butchers, two pubs and a fish and chip shop. The gentle undulating chalk uplands of the Yorkshire Wolds, which inspired the famous Hockney paintings, is perfect for walking and cycling and visitors can enjoy a scenic trip through the North Yorkshire Moors aboard the renowned steam train which travels from Pickering (12 miles) to the fishing port of Whitby.

Local attractions include Castle Howard, Wolds Way Lavender and Sledmere House, and family fun can be found at Flamingo Land. There are an abundance of quaint market towns and pretty villages in this area and a good choice of traditional inns and fine-dining restaurants. A short drive leads to the ancient walled city of York, steeped in history and brimming with attractions which appeal to all ages and easily accessible are the seaside resorts of Scarborough, Whitby and Filey. Shop, pub and restaurant 1½ miles.

We stayed here for a special family Birthday. There were various ages between 3-75 and we all had an amazing stay. The house is very special unique and caters for large parties. The grounds are fantastic for exploring and looking for wildlife. We would recommend a visit to the lavender park next door as walking distance and has a lovely cafe. Overall a brilliant break in the country.

Warm welcome from Hermione. Spacious, clean, well equipped house. Great location. The children loved den building and playing pooh sticks on the bridge. What could have made it even better? A hot tub to take in the fantastic views!

Deer park was a lovely place to stay and I would thoroughly recommend it. Although as with everything it really depends on what you want. The cottage/house is old and full of character, there were lots of rooms which meant that the 10 of us never felt cramped and it had a very nice feel to it (if anything there were too many rooms...the large kitchen and lounge meant we didn't really use the dinning room or upstairs study, which was a shame as they are great!). But it's an old house, the plumbing is old, there are spiders, there was birds nesting in the porch so we couldn't use the one door, things creak...we loved this and it added to the character. But it's all about what you like. The same is true of the location and grounds. The house is in a lovely field/park, with rabbits, sheep, trees to climb a brook to play poohsticks in and me and my children though it was fantastic. But to be as peaceful as it is means that it is slightly in the middle of nowhere - there is a village a couple of miles away, but everything is a car journey (or long walk), so don't complain that it's a trek to get a pint of milk! That said if you have a car there is lots to do within a short(ish) drive - lots of beaches, Dalby forrest, York... Overall it is what it is and we loved it, if you want to stay in an old characterful cosy house in the middle of some fantastic grounds it's great. Oh and the owners were very helpful as well :) Thanks

We enjoyed our extended family holiday and beach days in Scarborough. Playdale Farm was excellent for children under 10. The kitchen/diner is a great family room and always warm thanks to the AGA and the lounge was good. The showers upstairs were unreliable and the beds not too comfortable according our daughters. The grounds were lovely but not that child friendly.
