Welcome Cottages

A carefully curated collection of properties that offer high quality, good value accommodation in great locations across the UK, Ireland, France and Italy

This cosy retreat for couples is perfect for exploring the beautiful countryside of County Durham by foot and by bike.

Perfect for exploring this beautiful part of County Durham, Curlew Cottage stands detached, part way up a hill and boasts brilliant views across the rolling countryside and hills of the county. Built in the 1800s and with views to the rear, extending over the hills of Weardale, Curlew Cottage is traditional, warm and welcoming. Ideal for a couple wanting to enjoy a quiet rural break in a very quirky cottage, the property is full of unusual and original features. On the lower ground floor guests will find a small kitchen and dining room with a very low ceiling that adds to the character of the cottage. On the ground floor is a traditional living room with a balcony area that looks out across the countryside. This is the perfect place for bird spotters, with snipes and buzzards often flying by. On the first floor there is a double bedroom with kingsize bed and a bathroom. This is a real gem of a cottage and perfect for those guests looking for a quiet holiday, Curlew Cottage really is one of a kind.
Situated right at the heart of beautiful Weardale, the small town of Stanhope offers amenities and facilities popular with guests of all ages and at any time of year. A thriving market town, Stanhope boasts numerous places to eat, drink and enjoy the local produce, including a pie shop, bakery, fish and chip shop and plenty of pubs. With the county’s only open air heated swimming pool just a short walk away, guests can also take the opportunity to enjoy a dip in the water during the summer months. This is also the perfect location for guests who enjoy walking, cycling, hill running or rambling, as well as those wanting to just enjoy a leisurely stroll through some of the most splendid countryside that the county has to offer. There are multiple established walks, public footpaths, and bridle ways that run directly through the village and out into the nearby valleys, fells and unspoilt natural woodland. Cyclists will find themselves surrounded by routes of varying difficulty with some steep climbs, north and south of the cottage, as well as the quiet roads to Waskerley or Blanchland and the off road section of the Coast to Coast route between Rookhope and Rowley. For a more leisurely mode of transport, guests can travel on the Weardale Railway, which runs between Stanhope and Bishop Auckland, and is transformed in season into the Train to Christmas Town. About a 10-minute drive away is Weardale Ski School, and the Durham Dales Centre is only a few minutes away - a great spot for discovering more about the area. Killhope Lead Mine, Beamish Living Museum, Frosterley, Wolsingham, and the cathedral city of Durham can all be reached in around a 30-minute drive. A little further afield, but still within easy driving distance, guests will be able to visit the natural beauty of Cumbria and the Lake District, the Durham Dales, Northumberland and Newcastle. Shop, pub and restaurant ¼ mile.

Lovely cottage with lots of outdoor space and beautiful views. The cottage has a balcony overlooking the garden which catches the sun, we really enjoyed sitting out there to eat breakfast! The garden is lovely and there is also an enclosed field just to the side which belongs to the cottage so great for dogs. The village shops and pubs were just a short walk away, the bakery has a great selection of sweet and savoury treats and the local pubs were very friendly (also dog friendly). No restaurants in Stanhope itself but there is a good fish & chip and Indian takeaway, if you want a restaurant meal there are plenty of options a short drive away. We found the cottage was perfectly situated for walking and cycling, a lovely peaceful area, we would definitely come again.

Great location, clean and tidy. The accommodation is a bit 'rustic' but that is its charm! Would absolutely use again.

Very comfortable and clean, a credit to the owners Ann and David. Also excellent views and peace and quiet. Yes we would stay again.

We've stayed in a few holiday houses in our time, all of which we enjoyed, but this one really impressed us in terms of space, grounds, view, comfort, décor and homeliness. We were met on arrival and given a comprehensive and informative tour of the house plus a few tips on local things to do. We couldn't find fault with anything and would highly recommend Curlew Cottage. Great value for money.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Curlew Cottage. It was a lovely location, convenient for excellent local shops and pub. We loved the walking from the front door. The cottage was spotlessly clean when we arrived, and there was a very generous welcome pack to greet us. The one shortcoming of the cottage is the downstairs kitchen and dining room (which of course we knew about before we arrived). The ceiling is very low, and my husband (5ft 11in)caught his head a number of times as not only is the ceiling low, it is also uneven with bits sticking out! I just missed the worst as I am 5ft 9in. The problems with the ceiling detracted from the enjoyment of the cottage, which was a shame.
