Description

Full of character and charm, Crossways Cottage is an ideal base for small families and couples to explore the Norfolk Broads.

Crossways Cottage is beautifully decorated and furnished, and oozes charm and character with exposed internal beams and a wood burner in an inglenook fireplace. During the 15th and 16th Century the wool trade brought great wealth to the village. This terraced cottage still proudly stands in the heart of the village, just a short stroll of the village shop and pub, which serves good food and has its own micro-brewery on-site.
Neatishead is on the edge of the Norfolk Broads, part of the Norfolk Broads National Park. A staithe provides access to Barton Broad, a splendid long boardwalk out into the broad, which leads walkers to the nature reserve at Alderfen Broad. Today Neatishead is a popular place for waterside houses, during 1941 it was of paramount importance in the war and the RAF Air Defence Radar station at Neatishead was top secret. It could direct RAF fighter’s day or night, to attack enemy aircraft from Germany as they launched raids against military and industrial targets in Norfolk. Now a museum, it provides a unique window into the history of radar. Visit the Control Room, which serves as the centrepiece of the museum to learn how the radar system worked, and how the station was transformed after the War.
Just over a mile away is the pretty Broads village of Horning with riverside cafés, pubs and a small selection of shops. You’ll find day boats to hire and you can book a daily river trip on the Mississippi steamer riverboat. For the children, there is BeWILDerwood Adventure Park at Horning with tree houses, zip wires, jungle bridges and boat trips, which all combines to make a great day out. Wroxham, known as the ’capital of the Broads’, is just over 3 miles away, where you can hire day boats and see the wildlife. The sandy beaches of the north Norfolk coast are only 10 miles away, and in the winter months, take a visit to Horsey Gap beach where you may find hundreds of grey seal pups on the beach.
There is a wealth of National Trust properties to visit in the area which include Felbrigg Hall Garden and Park, Blickling Hall and Sheringham Park. Alternatively, spend a day in the fine city of Norwich with the magnificent cathedrals, castle, museums, theatres, market and vast array of cafés and shops. Walking, birdwatching, sailing, fishing (licence required) and cycling are all available locally. Beach 9 miles. Shop, pub and restaurant 30 yards.
