Description

A wonderful castle tower looking out over its own grounds, making a real romantic getaway location!

Live like a laird in this historic, fairytale Scottish castle which is set within delightful gardens - a simply stunning holiday location! Early in the 16th century, Robert the Bruce gifted the lands of Craigcaffie to his illegitimate son, Neil, Earl of Carrick, from whom the Neilsons were descended. The Neilsons built the castle in 1570, and its hall, now the living room, is an impressive, yet cosy room, with a truly magnificent original inglenook fireplace. With a ‘wee dram’ in your hand, you can just imagine yourself as the laird of the castle! The romance of Craigcaffie Tower will take your breath away, and original features abound, including a barrel vaulted ceiling in the dining room, inglenook fireplaces in the bedrooms (ornamental only), original doors with low doorways, and turnpike stairs with rope handrails. This enchanting castle makes the perfect retreat, hidden away in a peaceful location, yet within walking distance to the coast. If the weather is fine, you can take in the view from the castellated sentry walks that can be accessed from the third floor.
Stranraer is an ideal holiday base: not only can you explore this unspoilt area of Dumfries and Galloway, but you can also reach the rugged Ayrshire coastline or take a day trip to Ireland. This location is surrounded by breathtaking scenery, and there are many beautiful gardens to explore, including the world renowned Logan Botanical Gardens. The area boasts many pretty little ports like Sandhead, Portpatrick and the RSPB Scotland Mull of Galloway Nature Reserve, where thousands of seabirds nest in the cliff face during the spring and summer. Walking is a delight, whether it is strolling along the clifftop, beaches, hills or forests, and the Southern Upland Way also passes close by. It is also a cyclist’s paradise with the world famous 7Stanes within easy reach. If you prefer shooting or golf, there are many facilities nearby including the course in Stranraer and the county course is just a short drive away. Shops, pubs and restaurants 3 miles.

A wonderfully different place to stay. Plenty of space, inside and out, quiet and welcoming. Friendly hosts who provided a much appreciated 'welcome pack'. Great for quiet walks and travelling to other places. The historic charm was most appealing though some would find the arrangement of accommodation and stairway difficult. A few minor problems with gates, washer, oven, long case clock, Internet supply and WiFi, hinges of door to ramparts/ turrets but these can be ( and need to be) easily put right. A wood burner would improve heat output to hall and also vastly improve fire safety. We had a very enjoyable stay at Craigcaffie Tower with our Springer Spaniel.

We thoroughly enjoyed our time at the tower. The property is perfectly placed just outside of Stranraer so we had access to all the amenities and yet it was remote enough for us to feel that we were away from the hustle and bustle. The tower is just stunning with a garden to match.
