We had a very enjoyable week staying at this property, but there were some disappointments. I'll start with the not-so-good: 1. The shower is designed for short beanpoles - I grant, I'm not the smallest person, but I prefer showering without having to keep my arms down at my sides! 2. The floor around the bathroom creaks like an arthritic ship in a storm, making it impossible for one person to answer a midnight call without alerting the other (and the neighbours, I suspect, given we could hear their floor doing the same). 3. If the sofas were any lower, they'd be rugs, making the simple act of standing up a complex operation requiring careful planning. 4. The little notes everywhere, reminding us to clean up after ourselves, made my contrary brain want to do the exact opposite. My particular favourite was the one banning suitcases from the bed (which we are nevertheless directed to strip at the end of the stay) in favour of a luggage stand the size of a medium briefcase. 5. The 'welcome pack' consisted of a couple of teabags, sachets of instant coffee, the world's smallest packets of biscuits, and a few sachets of sugar in a small compartmented tray. It was all appreciated, and this is only a mild comment, but it felt far more like a travel or holiday inn room offering, rather than a welcome to what will be your home for the next week. I know this may sound harsh, but keep in mind, this property is rated five stars. We have stayed in many 4 and 3 star rated cottages over the years, often larger and more comfortable than this one. Little things, like posting photos that make the property look twice the size it actually is, and providing a television in the bedroom but failing to mention until you arrive that it's not connected to anything (so you can only use it for DVD playback), mean Cater doesn't live up to the expectations it sets. The cottage page proudly proclaims 'Luxury Collection', 'Washing Machine' and 'Welcome Pack' on its features list, so I believe it's fair to expect these things without caveats (it costs £5 for a single use of the shared washing machine, for example). I wanted to get all those out the way because I think they bear mentioning, but it's far from the whole story. On the plus side: 1. The location is beautiful - quiet, peaceful, and out of the way without being remote. The cottages are clearly signposted, with ample parking and a lovely shared courtyard area - there's even a comfy swing seat for a nice read in the evening sun and a collection of friendly cats doing the rounds if such is your thing. There are fields and footpaths around for walkers and dog-owners, and it's generally a lovely place to be. 2. Most of the equipment is very high quality and the cottage is pleasantly decorated. The furniture is comfortable and well-made, the television is excellent and even has a Blu-Ray player attached to it. There's a good little sound system, a Tassimo machine for making 'posh coffee' and a good dishwasher, cooker, and fridge-freezer. 3. There are plenty of lovely places within reasonable distances - we headed to the coast, animal-orientated days out, and National Trust properties (there's even an excellent cinema in Ipswitch!). Closer by, there are some beautiful villages, a wonderful tea room in a chilli farm, a decent Indian restaurant, and the Alder Carr farm shop/cafe, which was amazing. 4. You can buy eggs on-site, and there's a generous library of DVDs and books available for use. I hope this all doesn't sound too critical - my intention is to manage expectations rather than put anyone off. As I said, we had a lovely week at Cater cottage and I'm sure others will too - just take certain things with a pinch of salt.
